I was in the city today and, on a whim, walked into a bookstore to see if they had Paradise Sky. They didn’t, but the woman next to me in line heard me ask for it and told me Joe Lansdale was a good friend of her brother, and how much her family liked his books, and what a nice guy he is and how great his kids are. What are the odds?
I got it from the library already. I’ll have to read it twice, though, to remember it by April.
Wow that’s amazing, Mary!
@VeryHappy, are you a literature professor?
Oh goodness, no, although I did major in Comparative Literature about a hundred years ago. (Truly, this must have been around 1972 or so.) IIRC, I was taking – just for fun – some literature course. For some reason the teacher said she couldn’t stand The Golden Notebook, and I said, Oh, I love it!, and she said, Why don’t you run the next class and talk about the book – and so I did. I had a lot of fun.
What a great story, VeryHappy. More healing wishings for @NJTheatreMOM ! Not the same, but my first year French teacher hated the ending of The Little Prince and used to get one of the other less cynical teachers to come and teach that day. There was a lesson there, somewhere, though I’m not sure what it was! Thanks @Mary13 for keeping this group going.
I’m in for April 1! Thanks to @Mary13 as always for keeping us on track.
As I mentioned upthread, I’m currently reading “Hillbilly Elegy” for my RL Book Club. Interesting.
@buenavista - if Mount Auburn Cemetery is near you, we must be neighbors!
@NJTheatreMOM - hope you’re back home soon.
Underground Railroad is now in development as a TV series from Amazon, to be adapted and directed by “Moonlight” director, Barry Jenkins:

And I forgot to respond, @CBBBlinker, but if you live in that end of Cambridge, yes, we’re neighbors! ![]()
^Wow, our group thought Underground Airlines was rather cinematic, but now I learn that Underground Railroad is being made into a movie by a respected director.
So interesting, buenavista! Thanks for the info. I haven’t seen Moonlight yet but hope to soon.
And more news: Underground Railroad just won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Woo hoo! Thanks for the heads up, buenavista.
Another really good book that won a 2017 Pulitzer (in the “biography or autobiography” category) is
The Return: Fathers, Sons and the Land in Between, by Hisham Matar. I recommend it highly.
I just came to post that very fact!!
