Not a major user on this site. But I just need to rant for a bit.
All of you people need to think things over really quick.
Putting kids down/ telling them they’re not good enough because their ACT or SAT is below 32/2200 is just absolutely
ridiculous. I know for a fact that many schools such as HPYSM, UChicago, Brown, Duke, Columbia, etc. DO NOT weigh act/sat scores so heavily to the point where a 32 is bad. I know a person last year who got into MIT with a 30. A 30. In case you people forgot, that’s a GOOD score. The level of expectation on this site is ridiculous. None of you are admissions officers so please. Stop telling kids they don’t have chances with a 4.0 GPA and 7 AP classes.

^^^ What the person above said! =D>

<a href=“Chance threads are POINTLESS! - Applying to College - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1703402-chance-threads-are-pointless.html
If you are stupid enough to create a “What are my Chances?” thread, then maybe you deserve to be put down.

That’s a good reason why I have never posted my stats on WAMC and why I generally stay out of that forum.

The below link is a one past poster’s perspective who is now a student at MIT:

<a href=“So Chance Me Maybe? | MIT Admissions”>http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/so-chance-me-maybe

I understand why kids/parents post chance me threads, but they are just ridiculous, in general, as are most of the responses. What isn’t ridiculous is a lot of the advice on CC. Almost no one is an ad com, but if you look hard enough and read enough posts you begin to get a sense of the folks who have really thought about college admissions and a lot of their advice is actually quite valuable. The chance me threads and the responses are some of the worst parts of this site.

As one of the poster said, and what I believe, if you put yourself open to criticism but are not willing to take it, maybe you shouldn’t have posted the thread in the first place.

It’s akin to an artist publicly displaying her works, but gets offended if one person tells her that her work is mediocre.

Saying “you probably won’t get into MIT” (true in most cases) is different from saying “you probably won’t get into MIT because your ACT score is 30 rather than 32.” I hardly ever see the latter.

Ranting a bit here too…
This forum is honestly one of the most hopeless forums I have ever been to.
I’ll take a minute here to say, I really don’t hate CollegeConfidential. It is a great forum in many aspects, and it really helped me to clear up many of the misconceptions about college.

But seriously people, the AVERAGE ACT score is 19. 19! People come in here with 34’s and REPEATEDLY get told they will probably not be accepted so some schools. I know there are some exceptions. I mean, at MIT, Harvard, Yale and the like you simply cannot base off of score because that is all the school takes.

What’s worse is when I see replies that say students CANNOT get into a school because of their race, gender etc. Most people aren’t admission reps- they don’t know what a school wants. And yes, maybe the stats say that a low percentage of ORM’s get in. But still, some get in.

I’m lucky enough to have higher than average test scores. And to be honest, I can’t imagine coming onto this forum wanting advice with anything less than that. As the OP said, people here have forgotten what a good score is. Please, take a step back and think about it. Of course I know that a lot of kids will need to be told a hard truth about their scores. But expecting every student here to come in with a 2100+ SAT is insane.

“This site in general.”

*reads post ranting about chance threads."

Ohhhh, you mean “These WAMC in general.”

For the record, not everyone on CC bashes others over scores and stats. I rarely venture into the chance threads.

looks up post history.

I see you’ve posted almost exclusively in chance threads, asking people to chance you. Don’t post if you don’t want a dispassionate, logically based analysis of your stats. These people aren’t judging you, and other posts are accurate in saying that most people in WAMC don’t have an accurate, holistic view of admissions. Stop posting in WAMC, and you’ll stop hearing from nutcases. Your scores are fine, and I’m sure you are destined for a bright future if you work hard and seek your goals, so you don’t need to continue posting in WAMC. (I apologize for the sarcasm earlier - I mean no disrespect.) :)

ive never even been on the chance me forums. there is a chance me forum? whaaaat? now i feel like going over there posting my info and seeing whether i’d get into Yale. (I’m already in college i truly have no need for this)

I see it as the forum where people brag about their achievements and high GPA and yet, express their concern over the notion that their chances of getting into their desired schools (most of which are high match schools) are quite slim. Earlier I just read a topic where one user said the OP’s EC’s were “lacking” despite that he was engaged in several clubs, sports, and even seized an opportunity to work in a laboratory environment, plus more…

It’s really the part of this website where some people have no clue what they’re talking about.

@1501qwerty
Is it this thread? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1694535-chance-for-princeton-scea.html

Lol. I also thought it was funny that one person who replied completely disregarded the lab work and focused instead on something as insignificant as AIME qualification.

@Mangiafuoco
It’s this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1707574-would-i-have-a-chance-at-any-of-the-following-universities.html#latest

This kids posting stellar stats and is wondering about his chances. He made one post ASKING if he’ll get into a school, and one guy said his EC’s were lacking. It truly is the worst place you can ask concerning your chances of whether or not you’ll get into X or Y school.

Personally, he has a fine chance at every single school he listed, and he knows it too well. Just another excuse to brag about your academic career. Seen it quite a lot on that part of the forum.

This isn’t me being jealous, I’d never be jealous. I just find it a bit silly to be making chance threads when you know for a fact your stats are well above average that asking for other people’s opinion (many times they’re discouraging, which is another flaw with that section) is almost redundant.

Putting down kids with a 30 or 31 isn’t being mean, it’s being honest and realistic… A 30 on the ACT is an utterly pathetic score for ambitious students. How on earth are people satisfied with scores like that? I know people with a 30 CAN get into a top university but it’s EXTREMELY rare. They have some other things in their application that make them unique. For normal applicants, a 30 is an awful score. A 33 is the bare minimum, a 34 or above is what students should try to get.
@outlooker are you kidding me how about you look at top schools 25-75 act score. Most are 30-35, 31-35. I got into an ivy league with a 30 ACT and can name several other students who have as well. Having gone through the process, I see how important test scores are, but not what your generalized, typical CC persona has stated.
@gsants Just curious: during what year were you accepted?
@outlooker THIS year. I just finished the process…
If you want negativity, look at the International Students board. Guy with three 800’s on SAT 2 tests, 2350 SAT, many awards and extracurriculars that compete, and first thing people say? “Your 11th grade GPA is too low, your chances are bleak”.
May be the reality, but holy crap that is depressing…
@dirk150 oh gosh. That’s really sad
