Thematic Option Questions

I am doing my orientation homework. I need to block out my projected study hours. USC recommends planning for 3 hours per week per class. That seems to me to be too little for TO classes. What should I project? 6 hours? 9 hours? 40 hours? More? I am a strong reader but not a speed reader. Classes in question are CORE 102 and 111.

I’m pretty sure that number is actually 3 hours per unit per week. TO Courses are 4 units each. The amount of TO work will vary greatly depending on the week. I wouldn’t worry too much about planning study time at this point- it will vary greatly. Remember, you will probably be staying up later than you expect at this point. You may also have clubs or other activities when you don’t expect them right now. Don’t worry too much about having the perfect schedule at this point- things will fall into place when school starts.

Whoa! That would be 16 x 3 for the full schedule!

Somehow that makes more sense.

Thanks.

Don’t worry about not being a speed reader. You’ll have plenty of time to get it all done. And since you’ll read all the works you’ll be writing on for 111 in 102, reading speed is even less of a factor.

is it common for people to take 18 units a semester? there are some really cool-looking 2 unit courses that i would wanna take in animation or art, etc.

Relatively common. When I was a freshman they had these things called freshmen seminars that were 2 units and really easy. A lot of people did those. As for taking 18 units your first semester at SC, I’d be careful. Some of the 2-units classes I’ve taken have been the same amount of work as my 4-unit classes, so the work can really add up. There’s so much to do your first semester (especially if you rush) that I would stick with 16. If you really wanna take one of those, I would do it in the spring.
