Things Millennials Are Killing vs. Boomer Use

Watches are making a comeback.

@itsgettingreal17 “Watches are making a comeback.”

Really? No one in my family wears a watch anymore (at least not on a regular basis).

I remember when ink cartridge pens made a comeback when I was in high school. They didn’t last long.

Apple watches, Garmin watches, Fitbit watches are big. And so are traditional watches.

@socaldad2002 my millenial best friend wears one every day. They’re pretty popular around here.

We all wear a fitbit… which has a clock

So- no Starbucks?

Our S is into watches. Older used watches.

I think the largest shift is news, entertainment, media

They don’t watch Network TV
They watch everything streaming on a personal device. If they want to watch something they just stream to a TV screen
They don’t read newspapers
Most don’t walk into big stores to buy things

My D is a bonafide hipster and doesn’t like anything mainstream. She’s always coming home with ‘alternative’ everything

Reminder that the millenial age range cuts off around 1995/96. Anyone in high school and even most of those in college are not millenials. They’re the generation under us.

ETA: I make this distinction because there is a fairly big difference between those of us who were young adults in a depressed economy and those who are now entering early adulthood in a booming economy.

There’s also a line between those of us who remember 9/11 and those who don’t.

I was several posts in before I realized it was dining chains being discussed, not dining chairs. I had visions of everyone seated on barstools or the couch to eat meals. Which may in fact be accurate.

My S is a watch guy; he owns several traditional styles. And since he lives in the south and golfs, he has quite the watch band tan line! And he listens to radio shows during his morning commute. But Spotify on the way home in the evening. And thank you @romanigypsyeyes for validating that it is not just millennials “killing” these things!!

Watches are making a comeback. Agree. All 3 of mine have bought one in the last two years.

I have a couple really nice very high-end watches (I was really into them for many years) and I never ever wear them because they don’t tell me how many steps I’ve walked or my heart rate or how far I ran and at what elevation! It’s Garmin and FitBit all the way these days. If I die and leave them to my daughter, I’m not at all sure she will have any interest in them.

Lol. You are not alone - I had the same reaction. Which is true - baby kiddo eats at her desk at work or on the couch in her shared townhouse. “Dining chain” is not what someone would use to describe chain restaurants here.

@Embracethemess well now… there are some things I’m quite proud of being accused of killing:

-The 60-70 hour work weeks.
-The 8-5 no matter what schedules.
-Straws
-Diamonds
-Strict gender roles
-The oil industry
-Cable
-Doorbells
-Our two party system

Everything else I can think of is political

S1 has been a watch guy since we bought him his first one for his elementary school graduation. His wrist feels naked without one. OTOH, S2 hasn’t worn a watch since he lost his maybe 10 years ago. Neither has an Apple watch or fitbit.

I was picturing physical chains!

Boomers are giving up on diamonds too. Many are parting with 3+ carat diamond engagement rings. They will sell at a loss but probably come out ahead of doing it five to ten years from now.

Took an informal poll (sample size of 5) at work this afternoon and no one was wearing a watch. 25+ years ago almost everyone would be wearing one.

I do agree that some people like to wear smart watches but the traditional no frills watches are mostly worn for special occasion (e.g. citizen, omega, Rolex, Tag, Cartier, etc)

My S has a couple…and so do a number of his friends. They view as their fashion statement

Some employees are going back to watches as employers do not want to see them on their phones during work hours.
