Things not to do

Stairs, Bus, stairs! Flights of stairs! Or just a walk outside while it’s lovely. Let the letter wait until morning and see if you still want to write it then.

Too late, Deborah! I just hit the send button. It was a letter that somebody had to send, but I did not make it personally accusatory, just friendly and questioning new and ridiculous policies they have started. My husband will be unhappy because it makes me more visible, and we like to fly below the radar, unseen, but oh well. I feel better.

It would be worse to write your boss an letter when you were angry…and drunk!

Plus, it’s not lovely. It’s gray and getting ready to rain!

Bus,

I was always taught to write from your heart 1st… then from your head 2nd. Always works for me. I always reread my first draft after a good nights sleep and then revisit it the next morning. I have saved myself on many occasions because of this simple rule. :)

I shoulda done that, newhaven! But I guess I’ll see how it goes. It was the right thing to do, but why does it always have to be me.

Drive your car with kiddie’s shoes on top. :).

Sweating the small stuff because it’s all small stuff.

Taking life too seriously–things often don’t turn out the way we expect–we plan and God laughs!

Another thing not to do…
If you get pulled over by a policeman you should not jump out of the car and run…my S can tell you that it does not turn out well.

Never, ever, ever say, “I will never…”

This is just an open invitation to the Gods to make you squirm.

I will never give my child a binky, he should learn to calm himself.

I will never plunk my toddler down in front of a cartoon so that I can make an important phone call.

I will never ______. Fill in the blank with any of the hundreds of ways I’ve eaten my pre-motherhood words, and pre-teenager words, and pre-college years words.

Things NOT to do…
Failing to check whether it was reply or reply all…oops

Eastcoastcrazy, when I was pregnant with my first, my mom needlepointed me a sampler that said “With the pitter patter of little feet come one hundred thousand words to eat.” I still have it.

Another thing not to do: overfill a paper coffee cup with boiling water in the coffee machine. Because when you pick it up, you inevitably squeeze and the boiling water cascades over your hand, down your arm, and when you drop the cup in horror, it splashes up on your leg.

^^^^^^Ouch.

sending your manager a snarky email after 2 glasses of wine when you have no power (post Hurricane Sandy) and have been working 12 hour days under less than perfect conditions and he insists you be present in the office because face time is important.

Another favorite of mine: eating cheesecake before checking to see if you have lactaid on your person. (In other words, “Excuse me. I have to run to the drug store.”)

Don’t quit your job and move cross country with “the love of your life” unless you are married.

Don’t lean over the toilet with a cell phone in a loose upper pocket.

don’t share good ideas with a coworker who would share with others later and take credit for it.

This is the best CC advice thread yet!

Don’t lean over the toilet with a cell phone in a loose upper pocket. <= agreed!!! also, change “cell phone” to “camera”, and change “toilet” to “dock” LOL

Don’t quit your job and move cross country with “the love of your life” unless you are married. <= Before we moved cross country to San Francisco my wife made me buy her a ring. She also made me promise… before we moved to San Francisco (jokingly, I think) that I would not turn gay. :D

I’ve worked with many many many of those people. I think I must have worked with sharks.

And following on that idea:

Don’t work in the olden days before voice mail, have an assistant take a message for you from a prospect on a little pink message slip, and leave it in the toast rack where everyone’s messages sit. This happened to me once and a “colleague” stole my message and contacted the prospect herself. In sum, she stole my client.

I chuckle everytime I see this headline today (& it’s good advice!):

I’m not sure about your experience, but I think my gut instinct can usually distinguish these individuals, especially having worked with them. Where do you work?

I have worked in a lot of industries, always in the same function – employee benefits – and always in the NY area. Lots and lots of really messed up people. I am now (that I’m old) much much better at recognizing these people and either walking way in the first place or setting clear boundaries if I couldn’t (or didn’t) walk away.
