Things That Annoy Me!

When I was in PT grad school, our neuroanatomy professor always said noo/cue/less for nucleus!

Do you know how many times the word nucleus is stated in a typical neuroanatomy class?!?

And how did someone get a PhD in neuroanatomy without anyone ever correcting her? She was super scary, so we didn’t say anything.

Made me want to scream!

That’s called ASMR I think. Sort of the opposite. Apparently some sounds actually give people a satisfied sensation/feeling. Like the tapping. Or the sound of a keyboard.

That Apple products don’t come with instructions. I still can’t figure out how to do basic things on my devices even though I practically have my IPad glued to my hand all day.

Having to spend 10 minutes going through menu options whenever I make a call to a business.

Hypocritically, reading comments from younger folks who get anxiety just making a phone call. Do y’all not know how to speak?

In that same vein, Listening to my dh speak all day very articulately for work, but then he suddenly forgets how to talk when it’s just the two of us. Last time I complained, he said he can be very comfortable with silent companionship. No kidding bud. :face_with_steam_from_nose: Then he has the gall to tell me he thinks I have early onset Alzheimer’s because he’s noticed I’m searching for words. Like, imagine that? Someone who doesn’t have real conversations very often is losing conversational abilities!

Finally, why on earth don’t we have high speed rail in this country? I’m tired of cranky and dangerous drivers. We need another transportation option!

Oh, and people who say “I seen “ instead of “I saw”.

@oldmom4896 thanks but padded earphones and/or ear plugs don’t help. My problem is “hyperacusis” which actually means that sounds are magnified, and sometimes sounds of a certain frequency (leaf blowers for example) cause pain and numbness even at low volume, like the low volume with earphones. It actually triggers trigeminal neuralgia which is painful. The kind of hyperacusis that causes pain is called “noxacusis.” It often accompanies tinnitus and has its origins in the brain, not the ear.

My kid has misophonia. When she did her doctoral defense, the tradition was to bring food for the panel, and usually they munch during the defense. Can you imagine? It really causes violent feelings and panic. So she asked if they could eat afterwards.

Oddly, I love the sound of eating, slurping, crunching and also the sound of typing on a keyboard. In fact I commented on the latter to my daughter last week and she is going to compose a piece of music using the keyboard sounds. These sounds lull me. Maybe I should make a recording! My cousin slurps soup and cereal and I can barely pay attention when she visits because I get so relaxed.

New annoyance: I am in the city and wait for a walk light to cross the street. People go through the red light when it first comes on, and if I start across when the walk light first comes on, my days are numbered.

Speaking of Apple products - their constant upgrades that change things on my phone and don’t tell me! Spending a lot of time organizing my apps in MY files and then the doggone upgrade decides it knows better and creates new files and moves everything around - arghhhhh!

Automotive UI design.

How about retaining knobs and buttons that can be adjusted by feel for things used while driving (e.g. windshield wiper, HVAC control, and sound system control), while using the touch screen menus for settings that are typically set once and left that way (to reduce button clutter that happens when all of the set once controls have dedicated buttons)?

While they are at it, how about automatic HVAC control that allows a range of temperatures like house HVAC controls (e.g. heat if below X degrees, cool if above Y degrees, where X < Y, so if you are comfortable between X and Y, you do not need heat or AC running).

Things that annoy me:

  • people who are on phone calls in public places while on speaker phone. Happens a lot in the grocery store. So rude!
  • my nosy next door neighbor
  • any time my spousal unit chews gum. Sound of it is like nails on a chalk board.
  • people in grocery store parking lots who walk down the middle of the ‘aisle’/driving lane and they don’t move to one side so you can safely pass them in your car
  • when I’m supposed to get a specific thing at the grocery store and I get everything BUT that one thing. And that one thing is the entire reason I went to the grocery store in the first place.
  • people who drive a particular brand of electric vehicle. They all seem to have a tendency to drive like total buttheads and I am really really sick and tired of it.

Piling on restaurants - those who have those hard wood or metal chairs that while very trendy, are very uncomfortable and back breaking. I think some restaurants do this on purpose so patrons don’t overstay.

This drives me bananas! Was there some TikTok University that said doing this would sell more product?

Another annoyance, people who get gas and then leave their car parked at the pump for an inordinate amount of time while they are inside the store doing God knows what. Go in, pay, use the restroom, get a lottery ticket and get back in your car and drive away. This shouldn’t take 15 minutes. Or re-park your car in an actual parking spot. It’s particularly annoying because DH’s truck only takes diesel and there are usually only a couple of those pumps. What are people doing in there?

Yes, there are best seats at a table. You can look at the waiters coming out the swinging door, the wall, a plant, the bathroom door. Or…you can look out at the view outside, the pretty restaurant.

Yeah, I get tired of looking at the wall. They position themselves to always have their backs to that.

They know what they’re doing. When we were in France, we went on a dinner cruise on the Seine. There were rows of tables where one side your back is to the windows, or you are looking out at the gorgeous view. They immediately grabbed the seats where they looked out.

But….there was a bright light shining down on them. She asked me if we wanted to trade, as if they were being gracious. No thank you!

DH always offers me the best seat when we’re together. I decline half the time, as I don’t think that’s fair. He also offer women we are going out with the one of the better seats. He never hogs it for himself.

Another time, about 15 years ago, 4 of us gals went to a show. Had dinner first. Again, 2 seats faced the wall of the trendy restaurant, 2 faced out to the nice restaurant. She immediately took one of the best seats and said “ I planned the evening , I’m taking this seat”.

But she does it Every Single Time, no matter who plans the night. She knows exactly what’s she doing. I feel like she’s waiting for me to say something. I know her. Her response will be, “oh….i didn’t realize! Sure. What’s important to me is the company”. Yeah, right.

Maybe I should say something instead of seething about her selfishness. But I hate confrontation.

You are right about the chairs. A million years ago when I was in college, I had a marketing class. One of the things they mentioned was that McDonald’s purposely made their seating uncomfortable so you wouldn’t linger.

While I’d like high speed rail, there is an answer for that one - too many at-grade crossings. Can’t maintain that high speed for very long due to crossings. There have been attempts - I was involved with a feasibility study many years ago.

Back to jury duty - it annoys me on many levels. First and foremost, it is not a random selection process for issuing jury summons. I received a summons earlier this year, and it was the 19th summons I have received.

I have studied this and given information on the number of people in the county in the juror pool, and the number of summons issued each year, there is no way this is random. I am not good with statistics, though I can figure out that the odds of this happening randomly are somewhere in the tens of millions. Add to that - I have met a few other people who get called all the time - not random. And I have a way that I can tell I am getting called through my voter registration (all but two times), so I have seriously thought of giving up voting.

I propose that there be a limit on the number of times one can receive a summons, or if not, that I be permitted to schedule my jury duty date.

After being called so frequently, I also think that there should be professional jurors. Jurors run on emotion, and even though they may think they are following the law, they make decisions based on emotions. I realize that attorneys are counting on the emotion when they make decisions as to which potential jurors to strike, so they probably don’t want professional jurors - they would follow the law.

And the $9/day doesn’t bother me, though I can see where this needs to be revised for folks who don’t get paid while they serve jury duty.

To me, that’s like saying we can’t build limited access highways. Underpasses and overpasses!

Yeah, I don’t think jury summons are random either. I’m on the other side of that scenario - I have lived in my community for 38 years. The county was approx 42,000 population when we moved here, it is now over 270,000. I have NEVER received a summons to appear for jury duty - never! In this county I have been voting for 37 years, I have been a registered driver with NO tickets or accidents for 37 years, I am not a felon or have a criminal record of any kind, I am apparently invisible! I think it is just weird -or- they believe I am not a good “jury of your peers” representative because I don’t vote like 90% of the popultaion here. Could they do that? Just soooooo odd but when I mention it to anyone they just say Oh, Lucky You!!!

Wouldn’t you ask for a bench trial if you don’t want emotions in your jury?

people who say the same thing over and over and over

If I were on trial, I would most certainly want a jury trial - if I were clearly guilty of something, I wouldn’t have a chance with a judge!

Women fluffing their hair or just constantly touching their hair.
People blowing nose in front of me, especially during meal time - go to a bathroom and wash your hands afterwards.
Scheduling a same day meeting with me without asking me first. It is even worse when there is no info about the meeting other than the subject.
People who always select a restaurant within a walking distance from their place, but requires me to travel 30+ minutes to get there EVERY TIME.

Today reminded me: people going the wrong way down clearly marked one-way lanes in parking lots. Someone nearly drove into me out of a parking space because they turned the wrong way.

A while back a woman blew her top because I took a parking she’d been waiting for in a TJ’s lot. I never do that, but I did this time because she was going the wrong way, presumably to short-circuit the line that had formed going in. Because she was facing the wrong way, she couldn’t make an attempt to get in until the guy that had been in the space had maneuvered past her, by which time I was already in the space. I could see her yelling at me from inside her car but she didn’t confront me. If she had I would simply have said, next time follow the rules like everyone else. (Then she had to squeeze past the rest of the line of cars with others glaring at her lol).

The other annoyance is people who turn into the most selfish of people in school carpool lines/pickup areas. It’s like a personality change. This is universal - it happened in my home country too.

One of our bridge players taps her nails on the table all the time. Drives me nuts. I’ll stick a napkin under her fingers when she does it.
