Things you think are common knowledge, but maybe they aren’t?

One that entertained me, when my kids were very young and in pre-school and they were teaching them about who to call in an emergency. They taught the kids to “dial 9 - 1 - 1 Green”. And for a minute, we were confused. Then we realized oh yeah, with “modern” phones you have to send the call. Cell phone, current day landlines, they all have some kind of green button to complete the act of dialing. Our old school phones didn’t need that.

So what we thought was “common knowledge” about how to make a phone call has changed!

But the other one, and maybe this is only because of where I live, it drives me nuts when people refer to the Pentagon as being in Washington, DC. No, it isn’t. It’s across the river from DC, it’s in Virginia. I thought this was common knowledge, but apparently not.

I have had this handy conversion chart taped to the bottom of one of my baking drawers forever:

But, never fear, I’m confused about other things. The first time I took my first car in for service, the tech asked if I wanted my tires rotated. I gave him a withering look and told him, “No, they rotated all the way here.” I wish I were making this up. I thought he was giving me the dumb blonde treatment (I’m brunette). DH told me that I had just given that guy a story to tell for the rest of his life.

So, apparently, rotating tires is a thing. Who knew?

Maybe it was a Chesterfield chest of drawers - now say that 3 times fast!

DH revealed yesterday, after 40 yrs of marriage, that he doesn’t know how to skip.

and turns out he is correct, he really doesn’t!

Am I alone in getting up to skip around the kitchen to make sure I still knew how? ; )

Mine can’t either! Apparently some people just can’t. Who knew?

Didn’t people back in the day have to do triple jumps (aka hop, skip, jump) in middle school PE?

My husband - who can’t skip - COMPETED in triple jump in HS! I think because it’s just one skip motion he got away with it being more of a leap of sorts. But he absolutely can’t do the alternating knees up thing.

After my knee replacement the PT asked me to skip. It was hard and I had been quite the excellent skipper in my youth.

Skipping was assessed as a skill when my ds was in kindergarten. It took him a while to get it.

My 70 year old cousin for some reason just remembered that she was almost held back in first grade because she couldn’t skip! Her siblings worked on it with her and she passed - she’s a great athlete even now.

This question made me think of a conversation this week with a group of women I hang out with. One mentioned she’d just gone to a Buc-eees for the first time, 2 others said they’d never been to one and one asked What’s a Buc-ees? to which another said “YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF BUC-EEES!!?? It was followed everything chiming in to give a hilarious description of Buc-eees. To which the unknowledgable one said “I think I’m fine not knowing what it is.”

i know it’s a thing, but I don’t know why? Bucees is like a 7/11? or a Wawa?

Like a Wawa on a lot of steroids plus the Cracker Barrel gift shop

My husband had never heard of buc-eee’s either. We took my mom. She talked a lot about her trip. It was worth it for that.

My husband still wishes he had never heard of it and wishes never to return

On steroids! Plus there’s a ubiquitous beaver.

Because it’s GINORMOUS! As is 100 gas pumps. The building is Walmart sized and is a cross between a Cracker Barrel gift shop (lol I now see that above) and a gas station plaza. And the cute mascot is everywhere. And I found their prices to be pretty good on their merch. They even had running athletic wear! I want to say the shorts were $15-20. Seemed to be decent quality. And the wall of beef jerky… And a fudge shop area… And even kitchen wares… Pretty much anything and everything…

Like the World’s Biggest Ball of String, you can stop at a Buc-ees once and be done with it. And you don’t have to admit it.

I can recall doing a big shopping trip one time and the cashier was ringing up my produce. He holds up an item, “Can you tell me what this?”

I said, “Those are leeks. They are like big scallions” trying to be helpful (thinking who works in a grocery store and doesn’t know what leeks are?)

A minute later he holds something else up. “Can you tell me what these are?”

“Yes, those are scallions”.

Had a young guy hesitate with my produce and I said “those are zucchini” and he sheepishly said “thanks.”

My friend who didn’t know is also from California.

It just seems more national to me than something like Buc-ees which is (for now) definitely regional. But, maybe golf isn’t as universal of a sport as I thought. I felt like Tiger made it much more mainstream, but maybe not. I think of The Masters as a national thing, not a regional thing. Maybe such knowledge is simply more interest driven. As I wrote before, this friend is not into ANY kind of sports at all. I feel certain she’d know what the Super Bowl and World Series are, though. And, to be fair, there is more than one big golf event. I had to live in England before learning to call the British Open simply, “The Open.”

I’ll post my Masters outfit on the dressing young thread.
