this thread is very timely for me as my 16 year old just announced she wanted to go trick or treating with friends. we said absolutely not-way too old. she hasn’t gone in 4 year years since we are Sandy people too and it was cancelled-seemed like a natural end to us.
but now i’m rethinking my stance. it IS harmless fun for a teenager, and my girl-child is the kind of kid who has one foot in grownup world, and the other still firmly planted in childhood. we are in an area that there is never anything for them to do and sadly, no one planned anything for the older kids for Halloween…for some reason, teens are always an afterthought in my area and it stinks.
I am leaning toward letting them go. I hope she has the time of her life
My daughter and I were discussing the family of kids that come to us multiple time in the same evening …she told me I should have boxes of raisins on hand to give them if they try it again this year
Teenagers trick or treating are not teenagers throwing eggs, or putting shaving cream on anyone’s car. They’re not tormenting or frightening anyone.
They’re part of the harmless fun that this holiday is all about. They’re enjoying the one day a year when they’re told that it’s OK to ask strangers for candy.
DS and his besties all dressed up as Power Rangers for school Halloween last year (senior year of HS). They mapped out who would be what color and ordered adult sized shirts on Amazon. They had masks as well but were only allowed to wear them up on their heads for school as it turns out masks aren’t allowed. It was good, clean, kid fun for the >6’ 18 year old boys.
They did a group trip to Goodwill to find color coordinated things to go with the shirts to complete the outfits. Scouring Goodwill for a costume is a great teen activity in itself!
I didn’t want to hijack this thread, so I made a separate one about nostalgia for making Halloween costumes for the kids when they were younger.
My 7th grader is planning to wear a steampunk aviator costume she made to school, I guess on the 30th, and trick-or-treat. My 11th grader hasn’t dressed up at school since 7th grade.
We live near a UC where Halloween can get out of control. The schools warn the HS students about not going to that area.
We bought enough candy to feed 240 little devils, ghosts or whatever. That is giving each little witch one piece. If it is getting late and we have a lot left, we give a lot more. If we run out, the light ties out.
Soooo…should a trick or treater go early or late? I guess both early and late is the answer. A lot easier on a Sat. which it is this year.
