My son was accepted - Mech Engr. I will give you his stats and I want to try to boil this down:
29 ACT / 31 Superscore
3.65 GPA unweighted / 5.3 weighted (20 Honors and AP classes - no scores > 2)
EC’s - None (Hardly - we made what he had appear strong but it wasnt much)
White / male
Out of state

Honestly, he has everything against him except the scores and out of state. This decision has to be on scores and that we would pay OOS tuition.

All that said I want to comment on some opinions. People will say why they “think” got then in or not. There is no way to know this and it is only an opinion. It is my opinion though that a school like NC State is most likely making cuts based almost solely on sortable facts like scores particularly at first as they remove the lower numbers (DENIED) and approve the higher cuts (ACCEPT) while putting a hold on the middle (DEFERRED). On the other hand schools like Cal Tech, MIT, Harvard, Yale, Davidson, etc are making those cuts but then reading every app.

If you are deferred then I would guess that for some reason you did not make this first cut but in no way are out. They very much want to maximize some stats like GPA, ACT, SAT, income (out of state) and diversity stats while filling each major up. Honestly though - I dont know which ones they pursue but as painful as the wait is you just need to wait while keeping options open.

Good luck, keep your chin up and your options open.
