"Those ECs are weak...."- So what's good?

Didn’t meant to say “hooks” in the beginning. ECs is what i meant

So, I formed an amateur cat choir, called ‘A Catpella’. If I submitted this as an EC, will colleges take me seriously or flat-out reject my app?
I am completely serious.

In reply to Northstar mom’s post:
When you say that most schools just look at academics, does that mean if I have a steady, good gpa (3.6-8 or 9) and some good ecs, but not a fantastic GPA that I won’t get in anywhere?
I’m sorry, I’m just worried.
(I’m applying to places like Sarah Lawrence, Wellesley, and Barnard and Bryn Mawr).

That’s my question too. I have a great EC experience (see above), but my GPA isn’t spectacular.

So, how strong would Eagle Scout be? I just got eagle a little while ago, and my scoutmaster has really promoted how important it is to be an eagle scout for things like college admissions, but I think he may have been overselling the rank’s importance to promote advancement among younger scouts. How is the rank viewed among college application people? And do palms (sub-ranks up) make it stronger as an EC?

ECs should be things your interested in first and foremost. If you’re passionate about it, it should shine through and you shouldn’t get the “your ecs are weak”

I want to get into upenn’s Wharton school for undergraduate program . I’m in 12th standard currently. (Maharashtra state board ) I got 92 in 10th. Was the head boy. Won many debates elocutions and personlaity contests throughout school life. I’m also a cricket commentator. I’ve even had a stint in the Indian premier league(biggest cricketing event in the world) You might be able to hear me again In this edition on tv or on all india radio. I actively do community service and part of quite a few NGOs. I’m writing a fictional novel , it’s about half complete. Should be complete by June next year. I also have a business model which im going to implement after my 12th (in march 13). It’s social entrepreneurship where we make money and help people. I expect to get in 80-90 range in 12th standard. Good by ivy league standards ?

Eagle Scouts are great for State Schools and small Private schools most notably Jesuit schools

My daughter was a varsity cheerleader throughout high school and also competed (and won championships) in cheerleading. Also heavily involved in dance. I always think the cheerleading thing is a great EC because it is a little bit out of the ordinary when applying to more prestigious schools. Just my opinon.

But the most important thing in any EC is passion and time spent. Having 2 ECs is just as good as 10 if you demonstrate commitment, passion and significant involvement. Being involved in a sport/activity since childhood stands out. And excelling in that activity is a huge plus.

Complete agree with mspearl. If you take a look at my list above, I personally thing it is a bit stupendous, but they center around my passion for economics and politics.

I tried starting up different clubs in my school (model un, art club, photography club). . . but there was never enough interest among other students (just like when I tried to get the school to add AP Economics and AP physics). I wish I could have communicated how much I wanted to start something but was never able to.

yeah well passion doesn’t cut it when you aren’t good at it or if there isn’t a need for it… I’d say pick something, and do whatever it takes to be the best. my brother wanted to battle pokemon… and he won the national competition a few years ago
colleges love that. whatever you do, do it the best. that’s all they can ask for.

…And I agree with that also. With the time you have, if you are really passionate about something you ought to stand out in it, and apply it to the real world.

My only extracurricular activities were basketball (4 years) and soccer (2 years) and piano, and I got into Caltech. Schools are looking for quality over quantity. Are you really passionate about what you do (whatever it is)?

you’ll do fine

As you may have seen in earlier pages, my passion is economics.

This is weird, but, is helping form monetary policy an EC?

During my time with the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, I encouraged the Federal Open Market Committee to tie interest rates inverse to unemployment. (Which in economics is called Phillip’s curve.) I met with the President of the Fed district, and he also serves on the FOMC which makes monetary policy.

The Fed has just announced that it will be doing exactly what I wanted it to do for the first time in its history: [FRB: Press Release–Federal Reserve issues FOMC statement–December 12, 2012](Federal Reserve Board - Federal Reserve issues FOMC statement) We can only wait and see if this will bring down unemployment, but history shows such actions have.

TheFed President voted in favor of my recommendation, and was the person spearheading the reforming of the monetary policy in this one meeting. He admitted to me that my advice played a role in his influencing of his own thinking and the FOMC.

How’s that for an essay topic?

Ractogon, please just go make a “Chance me” thread

I have a lot of EC’s and most poeple tell me mine are pretty good, i’m just a junior but here they are:
President of Junior Class
Secretary of Sophmore Class
Lead Student Ambassador (shows new students and freshman school, responsible for making sure school sponsered events run smoothly)
Chamber Orchestra (highest level of orchestra offered at school)
NHS
National Spanish Honor Society
Performed at Carnegie Hall
Scholar Musician
All Region Musican
Indoor/outdoor track athlete
founded an organization that raised money and toys for victims of Hurricane Katrina
i’m also the “favorite” to become our NHS chapter President

Depends what college you want to go, and what you want to study.
What do you want to do?
Your ECs must dictate passion, dedication, and action to a field. What is yours?

Guys, I just think I blew my chances for Yale, and UC Berkeley (fam legacy), at least I won’t be able to go right after high school. I may have unusual and accomplished ECs are have engaged actively and passionately, but my grades… are not good at all. At least for this semester. To apply, even early action, would not be a good investment of money.

I do have a plan B. I plan to apply to CUNY, or the CSFs, or lower tier UCs. I intend to carry on my work with the Federal Reserve, Council on Foreign Relations, or whatever econo-political group will take me in. Once I build up a work background, and improve my grades in college, i might try and transfer again to Yale.
