"Those ECs are weak...."- So what's good?

That’s very true. I only do things because I want to. I’m the founder of the engineering club and the founder of Model UN at my school because I’m interested in becoming an international entrepreneur who builds innovations in order to help the world. . That’s my passion. I also want to do something with pre-med, but I still have time to choose. I’m still a junior.

I was wondering if anyone was willing to comment on my EC activities in relation to the college admissions process (essentially, if I’m up to snuff). If you are, reply and I’ll PM you  I really appreciate it.

why are people so rude about not having more ECs? sorry that I am not making it my whole high school goal to join as many bull crap clubs to look good for colleges. i have participated in three varsity sports year round all three years of high school. i have been captain. i do volunteering occassionally and i have a summer job. also i am in a committee at my school and will be in NHS yet people were commenting “you dont have enough ECs” “your ECs are weak and not competitive” i honestly think it is rude. i did not post for you to judge me or call me out. thank you though.

guys could you help me out? i have a physical disability and live far from school about 1hr+ so i don’t do a lot of extra curriculars so far i have done only:
literary magazine,
school newspaper,
teachers assistant,
student organization,
and research

but i have really participated in my schools research program and will be competing in the NYSEF competition this senior year and
did a biomedical engineering summer program at columbia university last summer and
a art camp trip to france during the summer.
I also did an art/computer design summer course during freshmen year
will be doing research at a lab in columbia university senior year
and also have been volunteering at a local hospital about 4 hrs a week junior year

will this make up for the fact that i am not very involved in extracurricular activities and am that i am not a leader in any of my classes i want to go to an ivy league school (Columbia my dream school! or Cornell)

whispers guys make sure to be founders/leaders of clubs! Also remember “breadth not depth” O:-)

Does it help to have a teacher from the college you’re applying to write you a letter of rec? I met the band director at one of my top schools and later sent him some recordings of me playing (I play bassoon). He emailed me back saying he enjoyed the recordings and he wrote a letter to admissions supporting my application and saying I would be a great addition to the music program. However, I am not majoring in music. I know it is probably not as helpful as being a recruited athlete, but do you think being a recruited musician could help me get in? Thanks!

@chootimes. How are they supposed to tell if you have passion. the passion can easily be faked in an essay and won’t be seen with a poor writer. It’s a measure of your writing ability, not your passion. Also would starting national honor society in your school be impressive. I’m only worried that doing this late in my junior year will make it seem more like it’s for college than out of passion.

@theanaconda: Is it for college rather than out of passion?

Hey CC community,
I live in Yangon, Myanmar and we don’t really have many chances to do ECs. Right now I’m in 10th grade and these are my ECs.
1 year as a class rep for Student Government (I won the election for Treasurer, but that will be next year. I’ll keep on doing it until I leave school.)
2 years on the soccer team, one year on JV team, and one on Varsity (I will most probably be captain in 12th grade.)
One year of MUN where I one some awards. (I’ll also keep on doing it.)
I might do Varsity Softball for the next two years
I’m a founder of a club called Footy for Friends where we play soccer with orphans, and we are going to try teaching them english next year.
5 years of Band
Part of the Theatre Production
And I will be joining a club called Community Service the next 2 years.

Do you guys think this will at least help me be considered, since like I said, it’s hard to do anything here.
Are there any clubs that I should try founding, etc?

@olivergoschow I’m still in high school, and by no means have any actualy experience with applying to college, but it seems like you have accomplished a lot so far! I don’t know what school’s you are planning to apply to, but I’d say just doing what you love to do is more than enough considering how much you’ve accomplished so far. Good Luck!

I started my own rock band and am the lead singer. I work pretty hard at that (booking gigs, writing songs, organizing/cooperating with the other members, planning and attending rehearsals, etc.) but I don’t have a lot of outstanding ECs besides it since it takes up a lot of time. My other EC’s are also music-related, but they do show continuity, focus and passion (being a member of School of Rock, getting accepted to the house band program, and then starting my own band). Will this be impressive to competitive colleges even though it’s fairly limited, because I focused seriously on something important to me? Or should I also be trying to do other things like community service, etc?

Question:Hello I have a concern as dealing with whether or not to take AP Calc BC OR AB:

My situation:

involves the fact that currently I’m in Pre-calculs and maintaining a high A.However, i have heard that AP Calc BC is strenous and fast-paced. I have always been good at math, but I do not want to end up with a C in the class.

So my question is AP Calc BC worth it with a B for the year to AP Calc AB with an A hopefully?
AP Calc BC presumably has a better curve and the AB Subscore but, is this worth my time considering my schedule which it this next year:

I am trying to decide if my senior course load is rigorous enough:

 • AP Calculus(AB or BC)
 • AP Physics
 • AP Stats
 • AP Macro-Economics
 • AP Govn’t and Law
 • Advanced Senior Seminar(English)
 • Science Research Honors Program( like the one that that enter Intel ISEF competition and SIEMENS)

I have taken this AP’s so far:
-AP Euro(5)
-AP Bio(4)
-AP Chem(dk no yet hoping for a 5)

Is this enough for a Straight BS-MD Program and would Med School require a math class caliber of BC Calc as it provides 2 semester of credit.

*I’m not neccesarily aiming for a prestigious university but a decent one

I would tremendously appreciate your help!!! Thanks!=)

Can you rate my ECs? I want to be a communications major

Newspaper Club (Editor): 9th-10th grade. It was discontinued, but I’m bring it back senior year

Published Author in two seperate books 10-11th grade

Debate team (captain): 10th grade- present

Peer tutor: 11th grade- present

Nationally recognized writing program: 10th- present

Community Service: 9th grade- present 300+ hours non mandatory hours. I teach toddlers on weekends

Summer Youth Employment Job- 11th grade: Selected by lottery, not sure what job will be

Looking to start a big brother/ big sister program as a senior

11th grade- curated a museum exhibit at the NY Historical Society

HELP!! I’m a rising junior and wanted to know how my EC’s are (if they will help me if I have high test scores in the future and good grades/challenging classes):

-Cross Country: Freshman to Senior Year (commitment in both summer & fall because of summer runs, Varsity Junior and Senior Year)
-Indoor Track: Freshman to Senior Year
-Outdoor Track: Freshman to Senior Year
-Karate: From Elementary School to Middle School (Achieved Black Belt)

-Fellowship of Christian Athletes: Sophomore to Senior Year
-Peer Counselor: Junior to Senior Year
-Speech & Debate: Junior to Senior Year

-Campus Ministry Student Leader: Junior to Senior Year (Selected by school faculty, 10 rising juniors)
-Student Ambassador: Sophomore to Senior Year
-Honor Council: Junior to Senior Year (Only 3 students per grade, class of around 325)
-National Honor Society: Junior to Senior Year
-Sophomore Retreat Leader (and probably junior retreat leader in 2015-2016): Junior Year

-10.5 Hours Volunteering Freshman Year & 20.5 Hours Sophomore Year (school requirement of 10, 20, 30, 40 hours over each year)
-Planning to be a Camp Counselor at my school’s 6 week camp for poor/underprivileged children Junior and Senior Year (125+ hours each year)

P.S. The reason most of my EC’s start in my Junior Year isn’t to pad my application, but because many (Honor Council, Campus Ministry Leader, Retreat Leader, Peer Counselor) aren’t available to be applied for until Junior Year.

@castle027 then make sure that is VERY clear in your application because it does look like you just filled ur resume

@castle027‌ @KiaraInNYC what do you guys mean by “padding” your resume?

@rstein3 “Padding” means adding ECs just for the sake of adding them

Hello everyone, I found a lot of important thoughts and advice looking through your discussions. I’m from Kazakhstan, in my country I took bronze on National Chemistry Olympiad, Gold on Regional Olympiad and Gold on small International Chemistry Olympiad only between 5 countries. Will it work as my EC for US and particularly for Ivy’s? Thank you!

Hello, I haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere, but if you run a business and put it on your college app, do you need to send them like a bank statement or tax return to show proof of funds? Cheers

I would recommend that if replying to a post, be more specific than “_____ is weak”. Give one specific thing the person can do to improve their chances. Additionally, as far as EC’s, I would recommend seeking several years in a few clubs/sports/organizations. Look for leadership opportunities and demonstrate a strong commitment.
