Reminds me of a conversation that I had with a woman. She was telling me about her daughter and I asked where she went to college. “Back East.” Where back East? “Massachusetts.” Where in Massachusetts? “Boston.” Which college in Boston? “Harvard.”

For heaven’s sake, I told her. What is with the “hide the ball” runaround? Your daughter went to Harvard. Just say it. I don’t consider it bragging. It’s just a fact.

When someone asks me where I went to law school, I just come out and say Stanford. If I don’t make a big deal about it, others don’t care.

Well I admit that I don’t always say where my D attended college- because I don’t know who has heard of it- many in our area haven’t.
I just say Portland.
I also find that if they have heard of it- then quite a few assume we have lots of money! ;)

“For heaven’s sake, I told her. What is with the “hide the ball” runaround? Your daughter went to Harvard. Just say it. I don’t consider it bragging.”

You don’t, but a lot of people do. If she doesn’t know you well, she doesn’t know whether you’re going to overreact. It really does happen, and it’s very awkward.

" I think sometimes if one goes to an elite school, it’s like they feel they have to hide that fact because some will take it like the OP does."

If you say “Brown” out here, most folks will wonder why you have to go to college to become a UPS driver.

Did it occur to anyone that maybe the guy bought the sweatshirt at a garage sale, he visited the campus, he was a prof there a lifetime ago, taught there at some point, ran a camp there, it was a gift, it was his roommates or his wifes, it was at goodwill?

egad

its a sweatshirt

I wear my Ds HS sweatshirts all the time- why waste them? its cold, grab a shirt

D also did this when going back to school after the recent holidays. Some guy at the baggage claim recognized the logo on her sweat pants as being from a Harvard club and offered to split a taxi ride to campus with her.

I also remember those long cross-country drives when I was going to college for the beginning of the school year or after the holidays, and you’d see other cars packed with kids and their stuff - headed for the same school. If you ever stopped on the side of the road with a flat tire or car trouble, kids from my same college would always stop and help. We identified each other from the school decals.

So these things ain’t necessarily bragging. They have practical value.

I just want to add that some schools practically THROW school gear at their students. Since arriving on campus a year ago I’ve amassed one hoodie, one rain coat, one fleece, one sports jacket, and four different t-shirts, and all except the sports jacket were free. It’s natural for college students (and beyond) to wear school gear. What else can we do with it?

What a funny topic. I live in a Big 10 town and that’s about all people of all ages here wear. On a normal day, close to half the people you see are wearing school gear and on a game day, about 90% of the people you see are sportin’ the orange and blue. Businessmen are wearing orange and blue striped ties and sometimes orange sport coats, kids are wearing orange hoodies and old ladies are wearing embroidered sweaters and appliqued sweatshirts. I realize Illinois is not as prestigious as Harvard, but people here take great pride in UI. Plenty of people are wearing shirts from other schools too although you’ll get comments if they say Michigan or Iowa. My son likes to shop at Steve and Barry’s so he’s got Tennessee, Miami and I don’t know how many shirts from Texas. I’m sorry that the guy in the Harvard shirt bothers you so much because I’m sure he hasn’t got an agenda when he puts it on.

I agree, JeepMOM.
I just went to the Yale Bookstore site and ordered myself a hat. I’ve resisted the temptation until now. I’m going to be paying tuition there for the next four years, so by God I’m going to enjoy the hat, but only on my remote runs. If anybody asks, I’m gonna say, “no I didn’t go there, but I’m paying the bill so I get to wear the hat.” Thanks all, for helping me arrive at this thoroughly examined choice.

my s bought shirts at many of the colleges we visited (serious contenders of course). OK, we bought 'em for him…
In addition to his chosen college, he still wears the ones from the schools that accepted him (and roots for those teams too as long as they’re not direct competition). He says he likes those schools who showed him the love.
I should probably try to unearth those couple of shirts from the schools that said no…maybe for sleep shirts?
