Thoughts on transferring out of large public university to a LAC?

There are various rankings so however each ranking service does it (their methodology).

I remember you from last year and I am sorry you haven’t found an activity to replace rowing. It is hard to move away from a sport and crew (like many sports) has strong team culture.

If I remember correctly, you may also need financial aid and unsure how this will impact your transfer application. Unsure if this is still the case.

If that is the case, there are many knowledgeable posters that should be able to guide you on options that may meet your need.

I would also encourage you to consider schools with club crew too - you would get the same strong community and more opportunity to manage the team. While walking on as a coxswain is possible at competitive teams - do remember that most will have strong coxswains already and you will risk not getting seated for races.

Again, if I remember correctly recruiting did not work out for you last year and that is hard - so making changes and a bit more flexibility in team level plus a school meeting your financial need will require you to dig a bit deeper.

Lastly, please keep in mind that lab classes don’t always mix with crew practice schedules and that will be another important piece of information you need especially if trying for a D1 program.

I was asking how YOU would rank a Planetary Science department?

I personally wouldn’t.

Thank you.

yep…it’s me again lol!

I appreciate your help–I have been keeping an eye out for schools that have club rowing, too, but I guess I am partially biased towards the more “competitive” programs just because that’s the HS experience I was given.

It’s been difficult not having rowing to take up part of my time during college, but I’m partially glad I didn’t have it this semester because it gave me time to realize I know I could handle both a strenuous major (physics/astrophysics) and crew again. A large chunk of my time is filled with me sitting around and missing the sport I used to be a part of, so that’s that.

I guess the main issue this time around is my hesitancy to apply this winter because I am afraid of going through the process of asking profs for LORs just to get let down again. Do you know any forums / other pages on CC I could post something along the lines of a chance me for transferring? I know those aren’t fully accurate but I guess I just want to have a better sense of if I’d even be in contention for some of the LACs I’m considering adding to my list.

No matter which college you are currently attending- you probably realize that this isn’t a great use of your time. You could be learning to swing dance, run a voter registration drive, figure out how the dining hall could eliminate single use plastics, compose a concerto…

Even if you transfer- learning how to bloom where you are planted is a valuable life skill. Please don’t miss out on the cool things college has to offer just because you aren’t rowing at that moment in time. You may or may not successfully transfer-- either way, you have so many fantastic opportunities right there for the taking!

totally get what you mean. That was a bit of an exaggeration to get across my point tbh–I’ve joined a couple of clubs, made some good friends, and even gotten myself on a research project already–but besides those things I do find myself missing rowing lol. I think I am taking advantage of my resources here, but I know I’d be the happiest and maybe even most successful at a smaller school with a rowing opportunity. it’s just how I feel, although it won’t be the end of the world if it doesn’t work out because the physics here is great…but the school itself just isn’t for me, which is unfortunate

Check for upper level courses of interest in that subject.

A female friend rowed in college, she loved it (and married a HS crew coach). She is 50+ and was a coxswain for a men’s boat at the Head of the Charles this fall. I think you might always miss it, she does.

FWIW, my kid goes to Connecticut College and loves it, and their crew teams seem welcoming and have nice facilities and a waterfront campus.

I do think if you have a need for financial assistance that could come into play at many schools. Indicating your budget will help the very knowledgeable advisors on this site.

Not sure if you start a new string looking for info about transferring in general after freshman vs waiting until after sophomore year to understand admittance, what credits would transfer to allow you to still graduate in 4 years, costs, housing avail/not avail and call out a few schools of interest to see if a reader has specific transfer knowledge.

I am also guessing you can do a search on this site for more transfer specific threads and then cross reference with rowing programs - varsity and club to build a list.

It makes no sense to have a final list until you understand the finances and transfer requirements and then you could research teams for fit and roster openings.

As a foundation for planetary science, I’d recommend courses in various geosciences topics, including sedimentology, mineralogy, petrology, structural geology / tectonics, geophysics and environmental spatial analysis. A field studies course also would be desirable.
