Wondering what parents’ opinions are about the financial side of going to 8 years BSMD program.
DD was very lucky to get into two top BSMD programs. With the FA packages, one costs us $45,000 per year but the medical school and undergraduate are lower tier comparing to another one which will cost us $65,000 per year.
How do people handle medical school’s expense?
The only way to pay is You either have cash OR you Beg borrow or steal hahaha
If you can and want to pay it all great. Otherwise students end up taking partial or full loans during med school. Either federal or private or a combination thereof.
There arr also need based and merit based partial or full scholarships in most med schools but they only offer to a verrry limited people.
FA packages usually only apply to undergrad since most schools have completely different expectations for their MD. Please make sure you are aware how each of these programs work since they would never have an average across 8 years.
Thank you. She got 3

Hey everyone, new decision to make haha. I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to make this choice. Please let me know what you’d choose here:
-
In-state BS/MD with almost full ride in a top 70 med school.
-
Pitt GAP BS/MD with $10k/per year in a top 10 med school.
Can you apply out in either or both without losing admission?
Does instate full ride continue through med school?
It is primarily a financial decision. I believe Pitt medical school is quite expensive OOS (dont know the rules of becoming instate during undergrad).
I believe that if you were good enough to get into Pitt GAP you will probably do well if you apply out after taking MCAT and figuring where else you might be able to apply.
If the delta is about $50K over a 7-8 period, choose Pitt GAP.
Appreciate any thoughts – my son needs to choose between the Sophie Davis accelerated BS/MD program and regular pre-med at Macaulay Honors in the the CUNY system. Putting relative cost on the side (they will be roughly similar), how to weigh the benefits of securing early admission to medical school and taking the stress out of competitve premed undergraduate years etc., vs. committing out of high school to go to a new/unranked/low-tier medical school in CUNY School of Medicine? On one hand, Sophie Davis may be the least desirable of all the BSMD programs since the BS program is intergrated (so no true undergraduate college experience) and the med school has limited resources and reputation. On the other hand, it’s quick (7 years vs. 8+), it’s cheap, and guaranteed. Tough decision for an 18 year old. Any experience/wisdom appreciated.
The medical school seems newer but their match list seems to be on par with any other. I see some deficiency in specialties but not sure if the school was set up to meet primary care needs of the city like University of Houston was. Most large cities have lots of medical schools but none focused on meeting primary care needs within the city.

I truly dont see a difference between the undergrad programs outside of the honors title. An undergrad is an undergrad that needs to meet the student needs of getting into a medical school unless they are not serious about medicine in which case they should find a school that gives them best career opportunities. If your student does exceptionally well and wants to apply out, it is always possible.
Hello everyone!
My daughter got accepted into only one BS/DO program - Univ of New England (Biddeford / Portland). Its a 7yr program with BS in Medical Biology and DO at UNECOM (the DO school is moving to new campus in Portland in the Fall).
Does anyone has any experience with BS/DO at UNE? Like what fraction of students make it through. How is the support from faculty and staff etc. Its an old DO program but for some reason there are almost no posts about it.
Also they want MCAT to be taken after sophomore year. Wondering if its possible to take MCAT after 3rd year (even if it ends up in 4+4).
Will appreciate any first hand insights? Thanks in advance!
I believe you can do Macaulay Honors with BS/MD.
Please call them and ask.
I have heard all of CUNY seats are only for BS/MD program(s?). Is this true?
The match list above is considered to be their first graduating batch since they started in 2015 or so but they just did their first BS/MD.
Yes, that is my understanding.
CUNY Medical School has the Sophie Davis biomedical undergrad.
@Metsfan7860 may be able to fully confirm it.
