time for flu vaccines in a couple of weeks!

@VeryHappy:

But I think that’s for family members of Costco employees, not the general public.

Well, the implication is that if they are talking about a “retail price” it would be available to everyone.

There’s also this: http://www.costco.com/Pharmacy/adult-immunization-program.html

which advertises the flu shot for $15 but doesn’t talk about the high-dose one. $200 for the shingles vaccine - ouch!

Yes, I think that link is what the general public would be paying.

My office has someone come in and do flu shots (nice of them, thought of course hey don’t want us getting flu during tax season!).

I’ll be having the shot in my right arm this year. I have a small sebaceous cyst on the back of my left arm that had never bothered me. A few days after the shot last year it swelled up and turned red. Ended up with a golf ball sized very painful infected cyst that antibiotics didn’t do anything for. I won’t go into the gory details of what followed but let’s say it involved several doctor visits, scalpals, lots of pain for me and not very pleasant for the doc!

I didn’t make the connection at first but I think the flu shot likely triggered something. I may be be adding 2 & 2 and getting 5, but I’m not risking having the shot in my left arm again!

Noooo! That means the long cold grey winter is upon us soon. H always starts saying we need to get our flu shots soon around now. I never agree until Oct. or Nov. Then I have no choice but to face the fact of winter.

OK, here’s a listing of the various prices for flu shots for folks who will be paying out of pocket. Costco still comes out the cheapest.

You’re right that I somehow accessed a page for health benefits of Costco employees and not the public, but the prices still look similar.

My school is giving the flu shots, but not until November.

I think I’ll just head to Target where I got it last year.

We are getting ours at work (free) week after next. It seems early to me. H’s doctor told him to hold off until later in October. Our company covers the cost even if you don’t get it when they come to the office. I hate the shots, but I get it every year.

I’ll be working in a school until December. I’m getting my shot, probably the first week of October.

@Momofwildchild, by chance, do you know why your H’s doc said to wait till October? I was in my MD’s office recently and when leaving said, “I’ll see you in a couple months for the flu shot”. MD was insistent that I could get it then and there - no need to wait and she said it would last the entire season. (I think I remember last year that the vaccine was effective for about 6 months). Same thing with my Hubby, different Doc, but H was also told to get it now and it would be good for the season. If others are being told differently about the long term effectiveness, I’d like to be forewarned.

I seem to recall that when I got my flu shot at Duane Reade/Walgreens last year, it was covered by my health insurance and I paid either nothing or a very small co-pay.

My lung specialist advised getting the flu shot ASAP and said not to wait. We are just waiting for the insurer to approve the high dose flu shot, even tho I’m under 65 because he wants his lung patients with serious conditions to get that dose.

Got mine this week as my yearly physical was scheduled.

His doc told him the vaccine’s effectiveness would be stronger in peak flu season if he waited a month or so. They gave him a pneumonia shot, though.

We get flu season very early in HI, especially with all our international traffic in our state. I’m hoping our insurer will promptly give me an answer about my precert request.

If people are being told differently, they are being misinformed. You should get the shot as early as possible. It is true that antibody levels peak and then decline, but there is no evidence that they ever drop below a therapeutic level during a given flu season.

Thanks Momofwildchild and others who weighed in on the “when to receive” question. Very interesting - I did better researching and keeping track of the ins and outs of the children’s vaccines than my own!

My parents both got their high dose flu vaccines on Friday. Our MDs want us to get them as soon as they’re available. I’ve never had mine “wear out” during the year and have been pretty healthy with my early flu vaccines.
