the flu has started to spread.

I received the shot twice this season. The first time occurred at a friend’s office. Then my hospital asked for proof, which my friend never documented. So I had a second shot about 2 weeks after the first one. No big deal and no noticeable reaction to the second vaccination. Btw, my hospital admitted an influenza patient last night who is now in icu fighting for his life. The season is officially here.
The flu is nothing to fool around with. I got my shot in mid-September, as did H, sis & my folks. This year, they think they did a good job of matching the flu strain, so the shot should be more protective than last year.
flumist may not be an option this year!

Just got my shot today. I’m on Medicare and it’s free. Why wouldn’t everyone do this??
I believe it’s free under all insurance plans, iirc.
emilybee…it should be it is pretty cheap to the insurance company(they probably pay 12-15 dollars) it can save them tons of $$$ if they can keep you out of the urgent care center , er or worse hospitalized!
Had ours at work a couple of weeks ago. Shot didn’t hurt but several of us felt unwell afterwards. (Headaches and generally blech). Worth it if i dont get the flu. I’ve had full blown flu twice in my life and it was awful.
An otherwise healthy 19 year old in my town died of the flu last flu season. It was very quick and very shocking. (I didn’t know him but a young co-workers husband worked with him and a friend of mine is very close to his family)
Youngest daughter left school yesterday (teacher, not student) feeling feverish, tired, and achy. She took her temperature when she got home - 103 degrees. Feels like the flu to her. She had her flu shot (FluMist) about three weeks ago, so should have been protected. I talked to her today. She had a temperature of 101 degrees when she got up this morning, took a mid-day nap and her temperature is now normal. She’s definitely laying low this weekend. No idea what’s up. Flu symptoms, nothing else - just a flash version of it, maybe. Strange.
Anyway, hope it really else a two-three day version.
It’s free UNLESS your doc recommends you get a vaccine that is different from what the CDC recommends and your insurer rejects pre-authorization, as mine did. Because I have respiratory issues, my lung specialists recommended I get the high dose flu vaccine but my insurer denied the pre-auth because I am admittedly younger than 65. Decided not to fight this battle for the $55 and paid out of pocket instead. ARGH!
@ignatius, there are a lot of viruses which “look” like flu but are not caused by the influenza virus. Your D probably got one of those viruses. Hope she feels better soon.
I have never felt so ill as when I got the flu about 15 years ago. 104 fever and the worst body aches I’ve ever experienced. The pain was excruciating. Then I got pneumonia. That was a 3 week ordeal I never want to go through again. Not only did I feel like I was dying, I would have seen that as a relief. Horrible horrible horrible.
^^Agree - I thought I’d had the flu in the past until I actually got it. I remember actually crying at the doctors office because I felt so dreadful. Next time I saw her she commented “you look a lot better than last time I saw you. You looked like you’d been hit by a truck” - which pretty much described how I felt.
128: If it just lasted a couple days, it's most likely **not** influenza. Alternatively, it could be influenza, but your daughter had partial protection that kept her from having a full-blown case of it, but that's the less likely possibility, as I understand it.
I had flu in 1981 and I’ve never forgotten it and never ever want to go through that again. Horrible.

^^Another one here. Flu was much worse than anything I had experienced before. Our whole family had it about 10 years ago. It ran through the family over a couple of weeks’ time. I got it last, just as everyone else was recovering, and ended up with pneumonia. I was afraid I was going to die. The second chest xray after a week on strong antibiotics was worse than the first. I had pneumonia twice more in the next three years. Our family has had our flu shots every year since.
In the past our office had a nurse come in and give flu shots on site. So nice and convenient, but it always surprised me how many employees did not take advantage of this. This year we will be getting vouchers to use at CVS.
We had a free clinic at the place I volunteer. The moms could not convince the 20 somethings to get vaccinated. Their reasoning “I never get the flu.” I nag my grown children every fall into getting one.
interesting

I got mine this week. Had to get minor surgery anyway and they asked if I wanted to get one while I was there. Loved the convenience.
With Mr R working with a kids, we get exposed to everything.
