Do not let perfect be the enemy of good.
I am definitely working on the increased muscle mass, @Midwest67, have started working with a trainer and am trying to stick to a schedule. I’ve always disliked weightlifting and exercises for core, but I know it must be done.
I do wonder, however, am I just going to end up with more muscles hidden under that layer of fat? Definitely better than nothing, but I sure would like to decrease the fat, also. Liposuction seems like a costly and painful way to go! I was hoping IF would be helpful for this, but maybe I’m barking up the wrong tree.
Have you got dexa stats or are you just referring to visible fat vs gravity? It does sound like tone vs flab. You can’t build muscle while losing weight.
MODERATOR’S NOTE: I just deleted a slew of posts, because I’m getting complaints about posts I didn’t delete. I will not be doing any more editing. Please act like adults!
That is not correct.
“ You can’t build muscle while losing weight.” Well… it’s a little more nuanced than that. You can absolutely build strength, muscle tone and muscle definition while losing weight. Building muscle mass while losing weight is much more problematic and difficult but it can be done. It takes scrupulous and meticulous controlling of rate of weight loss, macro ratios and structuring of a resistance training program and is a slower and more limited process than eating in energy excess to gain muscle mass. However, this is really outside the scope of this thread. @busdriver11, you know where to find me if you would like to follow up ?
It’s subcutaneous fat. The jiggly kind that enables me to look decent while clothed, but to scare myself in the mirror when I take them off. ?
Thanks, @MichaelNKat, I should have known you were the person to ask! I was wondering, though, as far as the context of this thread, if IF was an answer for my distressing level of subcutaneous fat.
So… back to discussing IF…
Just had lunch with a friend. Waited til 12:30 and the bento box came with a lot of stuff, so it’s likely I’ll eat little later today (within the 8 hr window). It’s so much easier not having to carefully monitor food intake, but it does make you mindful of what/when you eat.
Has anyone else noticed that they seem to be processing food a bit differently than before? Not to get graphic, but that does seem to be something I’ve noticed… Any IF’ers notice this?
@MaineLonghorn , I didn’t start this thread, but my username is in the title, so perhaps it’s reasonable for me to request that, since the question for which the thread was started has been answered, that you lock the thread.
Since my name is involved, I feel obliged to be involved, but I feel unqualified to opine on some of the topics that seem to arise like moles that need whacking ?. I think this thread has run its course. Respectfully.
@IxnayBob - understand your feelings, but it’s a shame that the thread would close, as it has been a helpful source of information and support .Perhaps @MaineLonghorn -the side topics about muscle v fat can be redirected instead, so those interested in IF can still converse? That might help cut down on any needed moderating. Just a thought…
Ok I will give it one chance. Side conversations should be carried on by PM or in a separate thread. Thanks!
I agree with @jym626 as far as requesting to close a thread that is useful for people being unnecessary. I’m sure many people are still enjoying the conversation. Personally, I just started paying more attention to this thread, because my coworker is into it.
If discussing using IF to reduce body fat is distressing, I will drop asking questions about it, however it does seem relevant to this thread. And I still haven’t gotten an answer. Probably best to contact the Source (@MichaelNKat) to get my answer.
The Diet, Exercise and Wellness Support thread would have been the perfect place for these discussions but that has been closed. So anyone who is interested in a public discussion will need to start a new thread.
I closed my FaceBook account a while ago, but one of its few redeeming virtues was a lively and moderated IF group. I don’t remember the details, but there was some oversight by someone in Dr Fung’s clinic.
They tackled many of the topics that interest those who don’t have metabolic syndrome, but are concerned with health, eg autophagy, exercise while fasting, endurance exercise, kidney disease, etc.
I have no idea if the group still exists and/or if it has held to its previously high standard. YMMV. Iirc, you had to agree to certain rules prior to joining. There were many IF groups; choose carefully.
I’d vote for (not that anyone asked my opinion ) changing the thread title to “Question About Intermittent Fasting” or just “Intermittent Fasting” so Ixnaybob doesn’t feel like he’s on the hook to be the IF expert and to better reflect the broader scope that now is encompassed by this thread.
Agree. I also propose changing the title to “Time-restricted eating” because that is the scientifically correct term for what is being discussed.
Love that idea @doschicos!
Done.
What is the difference between time restrict eating and IF? Aren’t they the same thing?
