Time-restricted eating

I drink coffee black but wonder whether adding coconut oil would help with the bitterness? Or just add a little whole milk, that little calories wouldn’t matter?

@conmama Can you find and post the link for everyone? I always have issues searching for old threads. I tried with google and was unsuccessful.

I know this is not all about calories per say (like for instance the insulin jump/numbers) but a wise man who used to be on CC taught me that his one drizzle of half and half in his one morning coffee wasn’t going to be the end of the world or the end of any health/wellness initiative.

I have read similar information. I measure one Tablespoon of half and half for my mug of coffee.

Rather than half and half, use heavy cream.

While I’m a believer in not letting perfect be the enemy of good, little “cheats” do add up.

I like my coffee strong, but I get heartburn with most coffees,. Kona beans hit the mark: strong, don’t need sweeteners, no heartburn

I’m a huge Kona fan myself, but Jamaican Blue Mountain beans are even better.

I don’t know how to find my old threads anymore @sushiritto . Sorry!

Why? Carb count for one tablespoon is .6 for half and half, .4 for heavy cream. Doesn’t look like much difference to me? If talking about what will “break” a fast it seems heavy cream is worse in that it has more calories (50 vs 20 for same amount).

What am I missing?

@conmama if you hit your profile you can click on your “threads” and see a listing of all the threads you have started.

First, forget calories. Preferably forever.

For what it’s worth. I tried drinking bulletproof coffee. I couldn’t stand it; it made me nauseous.

Possibly apocryphal anecdote: A friend says that in Bulgaria, where he’s from, waiters will ask you (cleaned your version): “do you take your coffee black or stupid?”

@IxnayBob I’m still not getting how .2g difference in a tablespoon is significant enough to switch? I do about 30g net carbs a day.

I don’t count calories, but I was under the impression they matter somewhat as to being in a state of fasting or not.

I was going to suggest erythritol or stevia to @jym626 -I don’t sweeten coffee but those are the two sweeteners I use when I bake something, make chocolate, whatever.

I wish i liked almond milk in coffee but i don’t, really.

Hmmm…now I am confused. I am doing the 16/8 but not the Keto. From what I have read is that you do not break your intermittent fast if you have less than 50 calories. I have no idea if that is true but I cannot imagine that 20 calories for your coffee with nothing else to eat is going to be a deal breaker. I am not doing the Keto diet because it is just not how I eat nor how I want to eat in the future. I think it is great for folks who like it.

@OHMomof2 , When you’re fasting for glucose control, insulin reactions are important. They are somewhat less so if the motivation is weight loss. Calories are among the important things in fasting, but I had to quit my Diet Peach Snapple addiction (zero calories) because it threw my glucose/insulin response out the window. I still wear a Continuous Glucose Monitor even though I no longer inject insulin so that I can figure out, empirically, what matters to my body. Your mileage may, and quite likely does, vary.

As a practical matter, if you’re able to IF as long as you can have sweetener in your coffee, DO IT. It’s about winning the war, not every single battle. I think bulletproof coffee would be good for me if I could stomach it. But, I can’t, so I don’t drink it.

You don’t have to do keto to IF. I don’t keto, but have a keto-ish diet.

There are a million versions of intermittent fasting. Do what works for you. I believe that only black coffee, black tea, and water are acceptable liquids on a fast. That’s what has worked for me. It’s not a religion.

I think, for what it’s worth, that the first 6 months or so of fasting should be as rigorous as you can manage. After that, bend a bit. If your doctor will prescribe a Continuous Glucose Monitor, I highly recommend it; they are informative and unobtrusive; current versions work with your smart phone.

I am coming back to this because it is the conventional keto wisdom that heavy cream is better than half and half - or a lot of advice goes “never use half and half! Use butter or mct or cream!”. But when I compare labels, the net carbs are SO close that I feel like it really doesn’t matter. It’s one fifth of a gram difference per tbsp between the two.

And for fasting, it seems 20 cals vs 50 probably cancels out the 0.2 gram diff in carbs.

I am in fact doing it for weight loss, and cholesterol control. It’s been about 3 years and have seen great progress on both counts.

Curious about the Snapple insulin surge - was it sweetened with stevia/erythritol or something else?

Could it be higher fat content in heavy cream that is more desirable for some reason?

Sure, for keto. Wondering about fasting, more though. Like bulletproof coffee is a keto thing but a terrible choice when fasting, I’d think (so many calories).

But if eating fat only more less = fasting, then that makes more sense.

I might try switching to cream and see what happens. I naturally IF from about 8pm to about noon the next day, or later. But coffee is in there from 10am or so.

I’m no expert on IF but did read up a little on Dr. Fong’s beliefs and watched some of his Youtube videos. My takeaway was that the insulin reaction to IF is important for weight loss in addition to those struggling with blood sugar levels. As he states, if it was all about calorie counting, dieting would be more successful than it is. IF pulls fat stored in our “freezer” - what h calls the two-compartment model. Insulin factors into telling our bodies to move storage from our “freezer” rather than just our “fridge”.

Crazy as it sounds, I’ve been able to stop using cream in my coffee by adding salt. I read up on it a bit and found there’s some science behind it. Somehow salt is able to override our taste buds’ reaction to bitterness.

Alton Brown has written about it and he adds salt to the grounds before brewing. Since I use a Keurig, I just toss some sea salt into the mug. Multiple cups of morning coffee/cream was the biggest hurdle I had when intermittent fasting. Never thought I’d be able to drop the cream.

I have 2 cups of coffee with 1 percent milk and artificial sweetener in the morning. I do a 15-hour fast. I lost 60 lbs over 3 years and have maintained the loss over the past 2 years.
