UCs and CSUs generally expect high school grades to be reported by semester, and California high schools typically report grades by semester. So the student has subject credit for only the first half of geometry, but not the second half.
Note that if it were the other way around (D in first semester and B in second semester), both UC and CSU would accept the B in second semester as validating the first semester.
