[QUOTE] @Wellspring I used to work for an ENT. I remember her prescribing Elavil, which is an old school antidepressant, for tinnitus. She said that she prescribed it not for the antidepressant effect but because it had an actual therapeutic effect on tinnitus. This was 25 years ago so take it fwiw.

Interesting. My H was prescribed Elavil for neuropathy
Thank you all. @NYMomof2 --yes, she was 89, and I do not feel that was nearly enough! And thank you for thinking of my sister. She is my main concern now.
@garland - so sorry for your loss. Good that the family could gather and best to you and your sister. I understand the feeling that it is never enough.
Thanks, @collage1. It’s been up and down. Yesterday, they said he’d been having an irregular heart beat and the rate was too fast. So they did a “cardioversion” procedure this morning which seems to have helped. He’s sitting up in a chair but not walking yet. My sister is trying to figure out where he should go next. Probably an in-hospital rehab program.
As I have discovered with our son, hospitals aren’t great. They don’t check on patients very often and make mistakes. Sister was upset to discover this morning that they didn’t put Dad’s CPAP machine on last night. WTH? And nobody has been really helping her with plans after discharge. Sigh. I thought it was just mental health care that was poor, but I guess not.
Sister should ask to speak with the hospital’s medical social worker and discuss all the options, pros & cons. She should ask to see this person ASAP and keep the lines of communication open rather than wait until they’re trying to discharge your dad and then start scrambling. Good luck—definitely challenging @MaineLonghorn!
@MaineLonghorn. No decision, he needs to go to a rehab facility. You have to keep on the nurses and doctors. Sometimes not being your nice self. When they see someone is visiting your dad on a regular basis then they will give him extra attention especially at a rehabilitation facility. My own 89 year old mother fell a month ago and broke her pelvis. 2 weeks later had a pulmonary embolism that the rehab center caught with a lab test. No surgery but at the hospital rehab and now a rehabilitation facility. She speaks up for herself when needed. She also lived alone with my sister close to her and drove and was independent. Now we have to decide in a few weeks if she’s going back home or not. She actually looks good but can’t fall again. She wants to live independently again. She walked great with her walker yesterday. Hard decisions coming up.
My mom has a chart for her medications. At the hospital or rehab facility they just can’t keep on the schedule she made for herself and okd by her doctor. This drives her crazy but I told her she needs to give a bit since they are understaffed at most places… Just make sure your dad is checked for bed sores and they are using an air type of mattress. This helps and is usually more comfortable and lessens the chances of it. The staff needs to check daily for this.
