Thanks. How long after your injury did you still have swelling, @ Lizardly? Ive been trying to take the boot top off and ice the ankle, but its doesnt seem too effective. Will try again before my Dr appt this afternoon. I am seeing a doc many have recommended, and who I wanted to see. Our s’s played ball together many years ago.
Understood. I had in fact thought about that-- that I do not want to be a hindrance. But DH will be there and I will be happy to sit in the rocking chair with the baby when I can. We are not staying at their home and yes this throws a kink in the plans, but if I can make it and not be an inconvenience, I want to try.
A good three weeks. It got better all the time, but I was noticeably swollen for three weeks.
What did you break, @lizardly?
I wonder if they ever give people blood thinners pre-emptively. Maybe not things like Xarelto or Warfarin, but larger doses of aspirin, or even just smaller doses. Good luck at your doctors appointment. It’s always good to have someone who will take your concerns seriously.
I broke an ankle and needed surgery to put in hardware to repair the break. I got a staph infection following surgery that wasn’t discovered until the orthopedic doc went to remove the cast. I spent the better part of the next two years with additional surgery (immediately after discovery of infection), crutches, a boot, and IV antibiotics. I traveled by plane once during the ordeal (Boston to Chicago) and arranged for a wheel chair and booked business class. Doc told me to take baby asprin before the trip. I got up several times (had an aisle seat). I also did pre-boarding. Good luck. My arms got really toned and strong (best they ever looked) from using crutches!!
Oh my gosh, Bromfield2, that is awful! What an ordeal!
Glad about your arms, though.
I got two new hips. I had them replaced out of state and then flew home. One on Wednesday, one on Friday, then home on Sunday. Weight bearing was allowed from the beginning, but I was wobbly and weak. I’ll pm you.
My primary instructed me to take baby aspirin before flying long before my cardiac arrest. I have Factor V Leiden deficiency, which tends to lead to clotting, though I had never had an issue (but lots of family history with clots).
Bromfield, that sounds so miserable. Sorry you had to endure that.
Thanks everyone for all the pointers. Got a good report today on the breaks. The bigger of the 2 is a non-displaced transverse fracture and the other is a chip that broke off, but the doc said both are below the ankle joint and the ligaments seem to be in pretty good shape, so while I’ll be in the boot for a month or more, I will be weight bearing in 2 weeks, just when I return from meeting the grandbaby. Hopefully all goes smoothly and the hurricane doesn’t interfere.
Just did a nice shared help a stranger. A woman on our neighborhood neighbor site offered to let me borrow her scooter (she broke her ankle several months ago). Turns out they were headed to a baseball game tonight and my office doubles as a parking lot for the stadium, so I lent them my parking pass so they can park in my office lot. Win win for all.
Bromfield that is terrible!
Not sure if anyone mentioned it or if it is possible, but check out knee scooters. They are the best!
Thanks. Borrowed a knee scooter from a friend the first day. My knee is all bruised so I am wearing one of the kids’ old elbow or knee pad from karate as a knee pad. Its really small, but it does the job.
A few more pointers: make sure to carry lots of small bills for tipping. Several different people may be wheeling you through the airport, and each one should receive a tip. And if you will need ice, bring ziploc bags that can be filled on board.
