Tips for leaving cats alone for the weekend?

Before you leave do this…

make sure any opened bedroom/bathroom doors cannot be fully closed…so kitty doesn’t get himself stuck in a room by accidentally shutting the door on himself. We put something heavy in front of doors to prevent them from closing… Or close doors of rooms you don’t want kitty to go into.

RIGHT BEFORE you leave…do a visual of your pet(s)…to make sure that one hasn’t gotten himself stuck somewhere before you leave (like in a closed room/closet/drawer/ whatever).

Personally, I don’t like the toilet water idea…I fill up my huge pasta pot with water and set it in the sink…just in case they run out of water.

I agree with multiple bowls of water than open toilet lids.

You might consider getting a cat food ball - the kind the cat has to roll around to get food out of little holes. It’s designed to help cats eat more slowly, but is also a great way to entertain them. I got one to fill up a free shipping order on Amazon, and our Tabby had a great time with it for several weeks - she would push it around with her head and stop and eat as each piece came out. It might help reduce mischief.

If you are concerned about open toilets, you can always take the lid off the back of the toilet. That is fresh water.

Although, cats don’t drink THAT much. A couple of large bowl or pots of water would be plenty for a weekend.

We actually do leave at least 2 large bowls of water. We only leave the toilet lids up for a worst case scenario – the bowls get tipped over or contaminated from a stray kibble (in which case, one cat won’t touch it) AND we’re gone longer than expected. It’s for emergencies only.
