Tips on the College Admission Process

High school counselors include a profile of your school when they send your transcript to a college.

A sample: <a href=“http://www.ucls.uchicago.edu/academics/hs/guidance/hsprofile.pdf[/url]”>http://www.ucls.uchicago.edu/academics/hs/guidance/hsprofile.pdf&lt;/a&gt;

Wiggle–along with your transcript, your HS sends its “profile” to the colleges, which lists such factors as test scores, number of APs offered, etc.

Do high school GCs typically share this with their students and parents, when asked?

Vossron, thanks for the sample.

YW, but I should add that this sample is “professional” grade in appearance, but the basic informational contents should be similar for all schools.

My son’s high school’s counselor shares a .PDF file of the high school profile to parents of juniors. The profile gets rewritten every year, because the school is small.

Another high school near here posts its profile up on the World Wide Web for all to see.

I understand, and I suspected as much. Thanks for the quick reply!

hi admission experts, i’m wondering if being a co-author of an article in a peer reviewed science journal (Journal of Materials Chemistry‏, if you are interested) is a major tip. I just received news that one of my projects has been provisionally accepted and i’m wondering if i should inform my schools about this.
If anyone has any experience on this please email/pm me. Thanks!

Is this something you have just learned about as a senior applying to colleges now? Most colleges that haven’t decided whom to admit already are about to decide.

^ haha i’m an international student… not too familiar with the application system yet, although i’ve completed all my application stuff. So how do you advise that i send over my paper? should I just fax the abstract over with a small note?

If you are trying to update pending applications, just send an abstract and whatever notice you received that the paper is preliminarily accepted for publication. Some colleges have already decided whom they will admit; others will very soon.

^ icic do you think it will be a big tip though? much thanks!

I have a question -

Colleges can’t see your AP exam scores unless you send them your scores, right? Do you have to / are you encouraged to send schools your actual AP exam scores during the admissions process? I got a 4 on AP Euro last year but I think some of my AP scores this year (namely Environmental Science and possibly US History) will stink. But if colleges don’t know…

^u can always withhold the ones u don’t do that well on. most colleges don’t really care, as it’s not a part of the application review process.

You are encouraged to self-report AP test scores, especially by the most selective colleges, but really by any Common Application college now.

Last year as a sophomore I decided that I would major in Economics/Business, but now I’m having second thoughts. I’m considering majoring in History or going in undecided. My concern with majoring in history is that I haven’t showed demonstrated interest. I switched out of AP U.S. History and into Honors U.S. History during the grace period, switched out of Modern American History before taking the class, and I was planning to take AP Econ and AP Stats next year. My school offers a lot of social science/history courses and I pretty much opted out of taking them because I was so focused on Econonomics. Is it too late for me to show interest in history?

If you have a new interest in history, you can still self-study for a history AP test. Or check for history extracurricular activities. There’s still time to have a new interest area develop.

EC’s like World Quest and MUN? Won’t only being a member senior year look bad?
