The very sidetrack we are now on is representative of the confusion about admissions. Some would like it all to be neat, clear, understandable. Kind, fair (as we define fair.) And in that diversion, the point is missed.

ARobot, no. When posters have interacted for a while- and when they retain the message arc as well as the nuances over time, they respond based on that.

What newbies sometimes mistake for abject rudeness is/can be emphasis. Sometimes frustration. Sometimes a shout. Not always a diss.

Did you guys see the response on the faster times? A girl wrote a great post telling Suzy Lee Weiss that she took her spot. I won’t post the link, but check it out. So funny. Bring some humor back to this thread!

lookingfoward, thanks for the clarification, but I am still a bit confused about the meaning of what you said. I take that you seem to be more encouraging to participation. Still, I guess I will go back to lurking mode for a while before I start asking questions or commenting on what people say.

What happened to all those carefully built tags? My personal favorite was the obscure reference to the show supernatural that I had to google.

In reply to PizzaGirl Chicago-Brooklyn references, I recalled a joke that goes something like that
A businessman got into a Manhattan cab and asked to drive him to Chicago. Ok, says the taxi driver. After the businessman was done with his meeting in Chicago, he is happy to see the same cab. “Now take me to Brooklyn”. “No way! I’m not driving to Brooklyn” says the taxi driver.

dietz199, thank you! Yolochka has a meaning that has nothing to do with yolo, that’s why I prefer to be called the name of my choice.

YOLO can mean you only live once which I don’t think is a bad thing.

There may be some negative connotations that I am not aware of.

For the life of me, I cannot imagine why you leap to this wholly unwarranted conclusion, especially since the fact that usernames are often abbreviated was explained to you.

Personally, I try to be precise about what I actually mean when I post. I do not appreciate people riffing off of what I say, loading me with opinions I do not hold and have not expressed. That happened to me in this very thread. It is very annoying. Read the words that are written. If you find something ambiguous, ask for clarification.

In my experience, the assumptions more often reflect something on the part of the one who makes them. They THINK they are discerning an attitude, but it may well be all in their head.

Oh please!

To be clear, there was absolutely NO intention to belittle, ridicule, or denigrate you by using the shorter “Yolo” and I did repeat it in an jocular context. Just as I did, in this thread about humor and satire! And since you claim to be familiar with my posting history, you will find plenty of people who have called me Xig or Ziggy or other spellings. And I have equally relied on shorter spellings (as I quoted before.)

To this moment, all I have done is asking you to “drop” the type of posts that questioned other members’ decisions. Again, refer to my exact words about post 399. This has NOTHING to do with the contents of your posts and your positions. It is about the style and design of a couple of sentences.

If you have any “evidence” of my attempts to quash your opinions (or even mildly challenge) feel free to post them, and I WILL reply. But please stop this non-sense about being intimidated. And stop feeling the need to attack posters for the sole reason of having been here for a long time. If mentioning how long one has been here seems offensive to some, so be it. This does not give me (or others) any more rights, but it also goes not put a target on my back, especially from recently debarked posters with an attitude. Frankly, you have no basis to say or intimate that I have been “nasty.” My record on this forum speaks for itself. Just as I ALWAYS speak clearly and … publicly when it matters. As opposed to launch campaigns via PMs. And, as a last fwiw, I do not back down from my opinions and do not hesitate to challenge others for THEIR POSTS when I deem it warranted. Just as I do not mind when people challenge my opinions or posts for their CONTENT.

This is just plain ridiculous.

I’m new. I was totally ignorant about college issues when I found CC last fall. Still just one notch above totally ignorant, but have found it a remarkable fount of good info which has helped our family so much in the college search process this year. Hope that I can give back some as I know more. On threads like this, that are too ‘fast and furious’ for me, I generally just lurk and learn and try to overlook the strong feelings. Just want to say love you all and grateful to everyone who contributes, curmudgeons or no.

I want to propose a new naming convention for posters in 5 figures to reward their verbosity.

Xiggi - Mr. X

Jym - Ms. J

PG - Ms. P

M2CK - Ms. M after the bond movies.

I am aiming for Mr. T if I ever make it to 10k.

Just because you don’t find something humorous doesn’t mean others may feel the same.

Just putting that historical reference out there for a mix of levity and as an analogy to describe the author of OP’s article.

I don’t think it was harshness so much as conveying an impression of disdainful superiority, whether intended or not.

Many people tend to react very negatively when they are confronted with that in conversation whether online or especially IRL.

Personally, when I see this attitude, I am reminded of a stock character who tend to be objects of ridicule in comedies dealing with snobbery based on superiority of their SES and/or their supposed cultural refinement.

FWIW, I’ve been here about ten minutes, and I find threads like this one (and there seems to be about one per week) a useful quarantining device for the strident so the rest of us can browse around the other threads for the helpful stuff. So . . . thanks? YMMV.

Why was my last post deleted? I expressed my desire to move on from the wrangling over words, despite the fact I still did not agree with recent posts. And then I accepted the olive branch extended to me by Pizzagirl upthread and returned to her the wish for peace. Lastly, I brought up the topic of a new article to divert the conversation to something else, though without posting a link.

I didn’t see your olive branch but I’ll take your word for it!!

Good, thanks! I did indeed send peace back to you, but something went wrong somewhere. Either my post was deleted, or I thought I posted something when in reality I failed to click submit. Maybe I need to take a nap.

OK, could someone please clarify the definition of a blog? I thought I was referencing a news article from a major media outlet that cited a legitimate research study, and even so I didn’t include a link. Was that not allowed?

I saw it before it was deleted!!

Are we not allowed to post links? I am stupid. Wait, can I use the word stupid if I am referencing myself? Maybe that is why a UChicago thread I posted on disappeared. Because I added a post with links to newspaper articles about previous years’ waitlists? The whole thread, gone. It wasn’t even my thread.

Moderator’s Note : I did not delete any posts today but someone else determined several posts to be not acceptable in the “friendly” content of this site.

Please refer to post 1504 if there are any questions about blogs. No links to blogs allowed which leads to no references allowed.
