To be or not to be val or sal

At The University of Georgia it does mean something!

“In order to recognize the academic strength of the top high school students in the state of Georgia, UGA will guarantee admission to students graduating as the valedictorian or salutatorian of any SACS accredited Georgia high school. Applicants must also meet all deadlines and Board of Regents requirements, submit an application for admission by the application deadline, and we must have documented proof of the student’s rank. These students and their counselors should contact the Office of Admission for more details.”

Of course, most of these students would get in on their own merits, but there is a charter school in my city where students who don’t do well in a regualar classroom environment can go, and they do have a val & sal who would qualify for admission to UGA under these guidelines. Their val & sal wouldn’t even be honor grads at the regular schools.

th1921–except for the charter school you mentioned, I would expect every val & sal to get admission to U of Georgia!

And if the so-called val & sal at the remedial charter school can’t make it at U of Ga, they’re not being done any favors, either by being top of their class or by gaining admission to the college.

My S had the top GPA as a sophomore, but apparently some girl is on top this year. I could care less and so could he. He’s a good student & works hard for grades, but the ranking has NO influence on what classes he takes. Next year instead of a study hall after the 1 semester AP Govt, he’ll be taking Woodworking. :)

And I definitely would rather see any student be active in ECs and excited about courses and possible majors than worry about the minutiae of grade-grubbing.
