One of our veterinarians’ children is actually attending a very good (but not wow-factor) med school on a decent merit scholarship. My riding buddy’s D is attending med school where her parents are adjunct faculty - partial tuition benefit (yeah).

Remember that just applying to med school is expensive. There is the application fee … and then traveling around the country for interviews, what are important. That was about 6K for my friend (keep saving those pennies, idad!); her D applied to 19 or 20, and interviewed at, I think, 7 or 8. I believe she had about 5 acceptances. Oh, she had so-so MCAT’s - so it is possible to do well with less than perfect numbers.

I think that children of doctors (human or vet) have a bit of an advantage, since the admissions boards know that these kids have a clue about the hours that doctors put in.

That study abroad thing is something I was wondering about, too. A lot of the programs had GPA requirements of 3.5 - 3.8. So either nobody is going, or the GPA’s aren’t that low.

Well, after sharing a laugh with ohio_mom , I think I am done. I am glad to leave on a good note. U of C is an awesome academic institution and I am glad that at least the CC students that are attending, love it there. Good luck to all the prospectives and thanks to all those who have been taking the time to have a meaningful exchange in here!!! I hope that I make the right decision as well!!

Top 10 Undergraduate colleges of Pritzker School of Medicine (Univ of Chicago) class of 2006 (total class of about 100). It’s not as prestigious as the law school, but it’s certainly a good school.

University of Chicago (20)

Northwestern (3)

There were about 600 MBA recipients from the GSB last year, so I’m not going to count up all of their undergrad colleges, but after a quick scan, it seems about 15 went to U of C undergrad.

juz wanted to say to moviebuff/tis that it ain’t as anonymous as they think (some people don’t actually maintain secrecy on what their CC nick is) and even if it were anonymous to your real life person, it reflects on your CC persona.

I didn’t really bother reading the entire thread. I have a GPA with a 3 before the decimal, somewhere in the 3.2 area but I am not sure to be honest and I have only been around for 2 quarters, so who knows. On the same note, it could be almost a 3.5 if it were not for 1 teacher not giving A- or B+, only A or B, where I was a single point (<.5%) off from an A (4.0) and received a B (3.0). Nice example right there of why GPAs can lie.

Keep in mind GPA can range so easily if you:

Take classes you are already capable in (ie I never took calc before and took calc 130s, but over half my class took AP calc in high school)

Really challenge yourself. You can take Nat. Sci. and get, at worst, a B if you do most of the work or you can take AP 5 bio and work your ass off for that same B. I am taking a grad school class this quarter (spring of my frosh year) in anthropology–I could very easily fill that spot with some other, very easy elective, and get an A-, but it is not what I am interested in learning.

Get lucky w/ teacher selection. I know hume classes where the avg. is an A- and I know hume classes where the average is a B, with plenty getting below that. My calc teacher was excessively hard and won’t be teaching this quarter, yet I know others who practically hand out A’s. It really depends a lot on how lucky you are with this kind of thing.

As mentioned, certain majors are very easy (GPA wise). I know somebody in my house who has over a 3.9, but even he will tell you his major is by far one of the easiest in the college (along with him already being well educated in the subject before college). Getting a nice GPA as a chem major isn’t the easiest thing though…
