Ah… interesting that they should come out in a somewhat sensical manner (the Bible of course being first).

I also noticed you started off with the Gutenberg Bible. Does this mean that you only want books that were widely spread after the invention of the printing press? That would disqualify important documents like the Illiad and the Oddessy, and Dante’s Inferno. Also, do “documents” include things such as the American Constitution?

Well, I am actually doing it as review for my AP Euro class (we are each making a top 20 List) so we are restricted to European literature between 1450 and present, hence the list. Either way, I thought it would be a good topic.

I think I’ve ordered it. Here’s what I’ve got. It’s due tommorrow, thats why I am in a rush.

Top 20 (or so) Influential Books and Documents

Gutenberg Bible: Johannes Gutenberg (1454-1455) translation of the bible printed with the printing press using movable type; marked the production of books in the west.

The Origin of Species: Charles Darwin (1859) evolution through natural selection; contradicted religious beliefs; creation vs evolution

The Communist Manifesto: Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels (1848) suggested a course of action for a proletariat (working class) revolution to overthrow the ruling class of bourgeoisie and to eventually bring about a classless society; communism; extreme socialism

95 Theses: Martin Luther (1517) Posted in Wittenberg, Germany on October 31, 1517; challenged the teachings of the Church on the nature of penance, the authority of the pope and the usefulness of indulgences. They sparked a theological debate that would result in the Reformation and the birth of new Christain religions.

The Prince: Niccol

More Contemporary book:
Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom.

It’s a really touching true story about a teacher teaching life’s greatest lessons.

In my opinion, switch Machiavelli and Locke and move Mein Kampf down a little on the list. I think that Hitler’s influence came more from his speeches than his writings.

I wish I had interesting projects like yours to do =(

yes, but you said you were biased concerning Locke :p

I put Machiavelli in between the two Locke’s. And I moved Mein Kampf to 11th after Common Sense.

Yes, I like my project I think I am satisfied with it. I mean really, the class if just going to debate it. It is nearly impossible to all agree upon something like this… it is an opinion.

OKAY SORRY EVERYONE. BACK TO BOOKS!!!

Personally, I’d say the Kite Runner influenced me!

I’m still upset that philosophy dominates the list. I do love philosophy, but I am a believer in the power of fiction! ha ha. I think Newton, Paine, and Freud should be higher. Freud did essentially found modern psychology, whether he’s credible or not. I’d also personally put Smith in the top five.

An influential “work” that definitely wouldn’t fit in the top 20, but still worth mentioning:

The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

Yeah, see the thing is… is that they are all so big and all deserve a place up towards the front that the ones that I put up in the front end up at the bottom because I keep switching them. So really it is just a continuous cycle :p

Thats why I didn’t want to rank them.
