Top Boarding Schools with more "free" or socially liberal atmospheres?

you can have fun at PEA, but NMH is ‘free-er’. Exeter seems (IMO) to be less so than NMH.

Lawrenceville seems veryy liberal to me. Kids can wear jeans regularly. They have many dances that have ipods instead of DJs. There are many different kinds of people there too.

Sorry for the misinfo on SPS guys haha
I have a couple friends there and they are always on facebook and im to talk at 2 or 3 in the morning so I assumed that internet stayed on all night… but maybe they just get around it somehow (?) idk, but yea… sorry :)

Hotchkiss is pretty lax on, say, dress code, but the no-chance policy is legit. They’re pretty good about sticking to the rules. The consequences are what they are - due to an easygoing dress policy for the girls, the school seems to be getting less preppy. sad preppy child is sad

how is HK w/ the dress code/what is it? can’t you not wear patch pockets?

How is NMH? I’ve heard very conflicting reports. Some say it’s relaxed, others it’s all-too micromanaged.

I would say it’s fairly strict. Although upperclassmen can pretty much leave campus as they please, they do have to sign out. You can’t go home for the weekend without submitting a weekend leave form. If you don’t submit it by Wednesday evening either you don’t get to leave, or you can leave but have to serve a restriction the following weekend. In my son’s dorm everyone must be in their rooms by 11PM. Lights out is midnight (these are upperclassmen). This is not really enforced as people are generally up doing homework beyond this time. I do believe the internet shuts off though. It seems like there are a lot of meetings (probably the same at most schools) which keep kids from being able to squeeze homework in during the day, so most people have to do it all at night after all of their other commitments. There is no shirt and tie type dress code, but kids are expected to dress neatly. (No tattered jeans or the like).

Overall, it is a relaxed atmosphere. The school definitely has liberal leaning, but I think most of the major New England preps do.

@Rad-in-Plaid: Well, technically you’re not supposed to wear patch pockets, but whether or not they’ll make you change depends on the teacher. I’ve seen MANY people wearing patch-pocked cords in the winter, etc. I think it’s probably easier to get away with as a girl than as a guy, but I’ve never tried wearing patch pockets to class, so I wouldn’t know firsthand :)

Grammar Fairy- I like your post count at post 28  ;)

HHAHAH wow Rad…

what can i say lol  HOMG, Yesterday, I was taking a test and one of the questions asked for the median of a list on numbers. The median was 69. It made my day  MLIA

if you are looking for liberal dont go to exeter…

go to st. andrew’s de robin williams talks about the dangers of conformaty there and standing out

in the movie…-.-

Robin Williams is an ACTOR who was in a movie filmed on the grounds of St. Andrew’s. If you love the buildings shown in the movie, that might be a reason to look at St. Andrew’s, but otherwise the movie has nothing whatsoever to do with St. Andrew’s School.

Changing mah post count.
Silly geese. :stuck_out_tongue:
@Rad nice reversal of numbers in your username.
HAH. Teehee

hehehhe i never noticed that! >]

Does anyone know what the dress code and internet rules are like at Hotchkiss?

In my opinion, Choate, Lawrenceville, Andover and St. Paul’s School seemed to be the most laid-back.

Oh and @fireandice012: The dress code at Hotchkiss is formal. Tie, collared shirt and suit and such for guys. For girls it’s simpler. I don’t know the precise details about the Internet rules. I’m pretty sure their website would offer some enlightenment (http://www.hotchkiss.org/</a>). But usually, Internet turns off at 11 PM and starts again at 6 or 7 AM.
