Transfer to UCLA: Most Important to the Least Important

We’ve been talking about people got in UCLA/UCB w/o TAP. How about those with TAP but did not get in? Do you guys know any? And what’s their major, GPA??
I’m a freshman and I wonder if I should join TAP. I’m afraid honor classes may hurt my GPA.

dhl3, are you planning to transfer to UCLA next Fall 2007?

Notes:
For engineering/science majors which require many lower division courses:
Major Prereg is more important than IGETC in those cases!

For Letter and Science majors:
IGETC is more important than major prereg.

very simple nice list!

Anyways, no matter what, GPA is the most important factor, get at least a 3.5 GPA to have a good chance of getting in!

Off topic: I will be a new Bruin for Fall 2006!!! No more paper works for the applications and stuff… >>relieved!

“Cardinal, you said your friends with 3.2’s with no TAP got in… care to say which majors?”

English and History. And not 3.2 sub 3.2.

“I’m a freshman and I wonder if I should join TAP. I’m afraid honor classes may hurt my GPA.”

Don’t be a gpa monger. Join up; it’ll help you stay engaged at CC and it’ll help you get in…Also, it’ll help you be prepared for UCLA/UCB etc.

Thats an interesting arguement about TAP, because in my CCC, we had a 100% rate of transfers to UCLA for those who used TAP. People with GPAs in the 3.2-3.5 areas got into some hard majors (not sure, but my counselor told me this), and even a couple that screwed up their applications also got in.

transferring to UCLA seems pretty damn easy if a person’s major isn’t too competitive…

seems way behind berkeley in terms of difficulty (like i said, for the majors that aren’t extremely hard to get into)

Ok, good. Then I’ll join TAP. Just another question:
On my CC’s Honor Program site, it said I have to complete 17 Honor Units before I can have priority from UCLA. Does that mean I have to complete all 17 units by 2nd Fall semester, by wich time I send my application to UCLA, or I can just finish them up in SPring??

ilovecalifornia,

No, not really. Relatively the same. I knew some “borderline” applicants who got into Cal as well. Two people aren’t exactly a good sample.

CL1209

“On my CC’s Honor Program site, it said I have to complete 17 Honor Units before I can have priority from UCLA. Does that mean I have to complete all 17 units by 2nd Fall semester, by wich time I send my application to UCLA, or I can just finish them up in SPring??”

If you school is on TAP or some other program that gives you special consideration for UCLA, the Honors Department will send them a list of students that will be certified honors students by the end of Spring. So yeah, if you finish it by the end Spring Semester you’ll be fine.

^Thanks for clarifying that, pellman

i guess your right uclari

English and History are only lightly impacted majors. There’s a high demand, but there are also plenty of spots. TAP is especially important for the most highly impacted majors because it gives you an edge, and anything extra for the highly impacted majors helps. TAP matters less as the major is progressively less impacted.

To clarify what I said, I read on this link (http://www.college.ucla.edu/up/tap/certification.htm</a>) that you actually have to fill up a short application that validates you being an honors certified student by end of Spring semester.

Yeah you do. Just consists of the honors classes you’ve taken + the major pre-reqs you’ve taken + gpa and a signature from a transfer counselor.

You know in the UCLA profile page for the admitted transfer students it tells you all the stats such as average GPA and units taken (http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof06_mjr.htm)?

In that page, do the GPAs include the Spring grade or is it only to the Fall semester?

Probably Fall.

Since the average units is around 95-100, it must include units taken in Spring. So i’d say average GPA also includes Sping grade. But then, i just guess

It includes Fall+Spring because if they consider the total amount of units the students have taken, they also need to take every grades including Spring 2006 grades into account when they compute the GPAs.

How does one know if a particular major is impacted or not? I tried searching but came up with nothing?

Transfer rates are a good indcation. Personally, I wouldn’t call a major impacted unless it has a 25% or below acceptance rate. Majors like Bus/Econ and Communications are usually the most impacted (I don’t count Fim/Theatre majors because they are in a different sphere than most majors).
