If your kid has to attend camps to be seen by coaches, he’ll be better prepared coming from the school with better coaching, so if football is the goal, that seems like the better choice. But as that option isn’t free, you are going to want to make sure the academics are going to be a good fit for your student and that you are comfortable with that option financially.
One other option – not one of your two – is a boarding school with a good program. That might allow varsity play as a junior, good coaching, excellent academics, and dedicated college counselors. Many BS are quite generous with FA, so while you would still pay, it may not be the sticker price. I only mention this option as it sounds like neither of the two that are local fit your needs particularly well.
