Transgender Students Ask that Graduation Ceremony Be Revised

The obvious solution is to have the gown colors differentiate GPA rather than gender.

I went to my nephew’s HS graduation ceremony. The program book had asterisks displayed next to the graduates names, w the number of asterisks denoting the GPA range. The kids w no asterisks were below 3.0-- how awkward…

Are we forgetting that in many high school districts a big part of the commencement ceremony is that it is essentially “a show,” for the parents and family? Therefore, having the genders wear different colors was/is part of the aesthetics of the ceremony.

If a school wants different color gowns, fine. But assigning the color by gender is soooooo 20th century. Maybe the high schools should simply assign the gown colors on the basis of what admissions buckets the colleges sort the students: by race, athletes, development cases, legacy.
