There are also certain days - I believe it’s either Tuesday or Wednesday (I would Google “when best to book international flights”) when booking tickets is at its cheapest. Then, as the week goes on towards the weekend, prices rise.

There are a lot of good articles out there (I’ve seen some in Forbes) on how many months in advance to buy. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the information off the top of my head, but I belive it was 2-4 month in advance. For my trip to Italy, I bought my tickets 4 months in advance, and it was a good price.

Also, remember, if you fly out and fly in or a weekday, it will be cheaper. And I second Kayak being pretty good.

The other posters have good advice re: booking flights. I will just add that airlines update their weekly offerings on Tuesdays at 3:00pm, which a good time to check Kayak & other comparative sites. And you will also save money if you can schedule your departure mid-week (Tue/Wed).

If you are looking to rent a flat, check out [VRBO: London](London Vacation Rentals, England: house rentals & more | Vrbo). They list flat rentals in a wide range of prices & neighborhoods. Another good place to rent an entire flat or just a room is www.airbnb.com. We have had success with both VRBO and airbnb for rentals in NYC, Edinburgh, Paris & Nairobi. Just be sure to check listings that have photographs of the rental property and multiple reviews by people who have actually stayed there. It’s also good to contact the owner by phone or email with any questions or to confirm dates prior to renting. (I believe in exercising due diligence before submitting a deposit.)

On our trip to London, I was able get a really good deal for rooms at a four-star hotel by bidding on Priceline. However, before I bid on Priceline, I did a lot of research about hotels, the locations and the current prices of the rooms. I then bid for about half the going rate for the exact hotel I wanted and got it!
