Friends rave about La Frida. I haven’t been there, but I trust these friends.
I’ve been to La Frida with my foodie son. It was excellent. And he liked it too!
If you enjoy wine tasting, Sonoita is just past Tucson.
I’d second the drive up to Mt Lemmon, or Saguaro National Park (east side is more accessible). The Sonoran Desert Museum is great, or the Pima Air And Space Museum, or Biosphere 2, Tombstone, or Karchner Cavern.
Tucson is great for food.
We went to the Tucson Gem and Mineral show today and decided to try La Frida (recommended upthread) for dinner. The food was beautiful on the plate: DH had flautas (green sauce), I had enchiladas (red sauce)
but I have to say the food looked better than it tasted, at least to me. My dish was rather bland. It was OK, but I wouldn’t stand in line for it. There was a 40-minute wait when we got there at 4:30, over an hour by the time we left, and the bar wouldn’t serve you a drink (alcoholic or not) while you waited. Glad we tried it, wouldn’t go back.
Eat a meal at El Antojo Poblano. Best Mexican food you’ll ever have. Their mole is shipped from southern Mexico and the owner’s elderly mom ships it to them. Every dish I’ve had there is really amazingly good.
If you go to Mission San Xavier del Bac, bring some cash because if you’re lucky, some people will be selling fry bread just out in front of the church.
There’s also the Titan Missile Museum in Green Valley just south of Tucson. Part of one of the Star Trek movies was filmed there.
Sonoran Desert Museum in Tucson is a cool place.
In Phoenix, check out the Heard Museum. Also Desert Botanical Garden. Tucson has a really nice botanical garden, too…and there’s Tohono Chul Park on the NW side of Tucson (it’s a botanical garden also).
There’s some decently priced hotels near the 202 and 101 freeways (near the Chandler mall) which won’t break the bank.
Do they take reservations?
No, but you can call ahead to get on the waitlist. Another ding.
ETA: Good luck finding parking. They have a very small front lot. DH idled 20 minutes waiting for a spot. Others parked at Pep Boys across the street and ran across the divided highway back to the restaurant. No light, not safe!
Either they need to hire an MBA or they hired one too many MBAs.
I mentioned all of this to our son. He is going to check it all out. We are thinking of going at lunchtime. Maybe that’s a better idea than dinner?
