Travel Insurance Questions

Thanks to everyone for all the helpful hints! Will look at the links that were provided.

We are relying on our card to cover some part of our trip. We took out trip insurance for other costs.

Thanks for the feedback. We purchase Allianze coverage (medical and cancellation) via our AAA agent when we book the trip. The cost increases with age, but for us it’s been in the range of 10% of the trip cost. (If we are using frequent flier miles, that part is “covered” by United’s policy allowing you to re-deposit miles.)

@cbreeze GeoBlue policy does not cover type 1 diabetes. That is the only preexisting condition not covered by any travel insurance. Not sure why you assumed my kid was going abroad for a long period without US health insurance.

I don’t think bleeding disorders are covered, either. I checked on Factor XI Deficiency for my son and I couldn’t find any company that would give him coverage at all. I’m glad he’s in Poland now and has health insurance through his fiancée.

Interesting. There may be others. I was quoting a Geo Blue rep who told me type 1 diabetes was the only condition not covered but they may have been mistaken. To be clear, my kid can get emergency coverage through Allianz.

I think the issue with this bleeding disorder is that each dose of factor is at least $20,000 and multiple doses can be required.

My comments were not directed at you. It was just for general information.
I did ask my agent on Geoblue restrictions for type 1 diabetes and he said he doesn’t think that’s a restriction as it covers insulin and syringes.

We got flat out refusal. Type 1’s don’t manage with just insulin and syringes, so he may not have known much about it. No more tangent on this,

OP here, just to provide an update. As I mentioned earlier, we originally had gotten insurance from Zurich for the 8-day Mediterranean cruise we had booked. We are now planning to stay an extra 10 days in Europe on the front end before the cruise and were mostly concerned about getting medical coverage for the extended stay (as we were anticipating our plane tickets and hotel stays would be refundable if we had to cancel).

According to Zurich, there was no additional cost to extend the coverage start and end days, so I was able to adjust the start date of the policy to begin 10 days earlier. This does not make sense to me, as we now have medical/evacuation coverage for 10 extra days at no additional cost. I’m not complaining, but what am I missing here??

I know when we were looking at travel insurance the guy (Steve) said what’s important is to pick the dates so the clock starts on the medics - the dollar amount wasn’t so important. So what you’re saying makes sense to me/is in line with that.
