Travel -- The places you might NOT want to visit again!

I’m enjoying this thread but I’m realizing how little I’ve traveled! I always enjoy reading the opinions of this group so it is very interesting.

Paris: w the rest of the world beckoning, tell me again why i should fly across an ocean for an an overpriced city where locals are arrogant? Just seeing the initials CDG makes me cringe

Naples: just visit the museum-- the rest of city is a dirty, scary, graffitied armpit

Las Vegas: tacky

Phuket: also tacky, but at least it’s got sunsets and Thai food

China (all of it): choking pollution, ill-mannered spitting locals w no “inside voice”, tainted food, censured Internet

Disney parks: ridiculously priced admission to stand in ridiculously long queues

Luxembourg: no wonder it’s co-branded w the netherlands & belgium as “benelux”; otherwise, no one wd even bother w this place

Tunis: one big scam bazaar

Mumbai: words fail me…

Interesting topic. I can usually find something to like anywhere. But I’ve been to all 50 states and most European countries and Canada and Mexico and most islands in the Caribbean so my list of places I am in no hurry to go back to:

Mexico: Anywhere. Too many drug cartel killings, dirty water, unsafe food, corrupt police and on and on.

Disneyland or any other theme park. I haven’t been to one for 20 years. Everything is false, phony.

Jamaica or St. Lucia: There are beaches in all sorts of places. These countries didn’t feel safe.
One of those gigantic cruise ships: I have no desire to travel anywhere with 2,000 other people where the main activity is eating.

Antarctica: I’ve never been, but I don’t see the appeal of being in cold, gray, icy climes.

Fun thread - love the different perspectives. I could happily forgo returning to the farm-turned-vacation-retreat Hubby inherited, but I don’t think that is in the cards.

Having lived in LA for the past 20 years, I can totally understand not wanting to visit. It’s not tourist friendly at all. I do LOVE living here though.

We went to Oceans of Fun once, and that is when it occurred to me that God really has a sense of humor.

Would not go back to Canberra. Capital cities bustling and interesting, but Canberra was a total snooze. Plenty of other places to go in Australia.

^^pretty sure Samana is the Dominican Republic.

I have never been to Iraq, Iran, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, France or parts of Africa and never will. My niece was studying in South Africa, which she said was lovely. I would also avoid Mexico…been too many times and it’s really a rip-off and been there done that… I’ve been to many Caribbean Islands and the only one I would avoid is Bonaire. Absolutely nothing there, a very primitive island!

Of all the cities in Europe that I’ve been to the only one I would never go back to is Brussels. Dreary.

I also won’t go to Germany… I’ve never been but have zero desire. I really wanted to do one of the Viking River Cruises but they all go though Germany.

^^Hi eb:

That’s the way I feel about France. Absolutely no desire to go there.

I usually withhold judgment until I’ve actually been someplace and then didn’t enjoy it. I didn’t think I would enjoy Paris, but it totally blew me away. My favorite city by far.

The biggest turn off at Paris is the Eiffel Tower, gipsies are everywhere and they try to rob you and the guards with long guns at the base of the tower. This was supposed to be fun? I paid money to see this. Get me the American Sniper protection please. And the fear of height on top of this, I think my definition of fun is not this place. Run DrGoogle run(ok copy Forrest Gum here) was what I was telling myself. A war zone?

The joys of Paris are the little pleasures. A stroll along the Seine browsing the drawings and books for sale. Walking through the Tuileries and enjoying the fountain and kids playing with the sailboats. Getting a fresh baguette from a bakery in St Germaine de Pres and strolling the streets to see the Rodin Museum. Getting some delicious pastries, candies and cakes in the neighborhood patisseries. Shopping in the local markets. Seeing great art in all the fantastic museums (my favorite is the Musee d’Orsay). Taking an evening cruise on the Bateaux Mouche watching the banks illuminated. Seeing all the monuments lit up at night. Etc…

OK, I’ll admit it – I’ve never had the desire to go to Hawaii, in part because everyone says you “have to.”

Las Vegas - although I would fly there as a cheap way to get to the north rim of the Grand Canyon, or to the parks in southern Utah.

Phoenix - no reason for it

Orlando - oops! I have to go there because my SIL is there but I don’t have to get out of her pool!

The Poconos- too crowded

Milan - boring, and everything is closed

I haven’t been to Brussels but I have an H who loves Belgian beer so I fear it is in my future. I had a HS teacher who hated Bayonne, NJ and always complained about it (don’t know why). He referred to Brussels as “the Bayonne of Europe”.

Pictures don’t do Hawaii justice.

The entire Caribbean is something I’d rather skip. Bores me. Not enough history for my liking.

NoVAdad…that is exactly how I felt about Paris…expected to hate it and loved it…as opposed to Germany…not exactly a warm and fuzzy place.

HI is one place we would live if it weren’t so far away from all other travel destinations. Love Kauai and the Big Island especially. They both fit our rural, nature loving selves.

Paris is my absolute favorite in the world, then Barcelona, then London.

@greenwitch, go to Bruges instead. Much more charming than Brussels - although the weather can be dreary there, too. I don’t believe the sun ever shines in Belgium.

NoVAdad is the man. He understands.

And DrGoogle - why did you go on Eiffel Tower if you are afraid of heights. You should have went to La Rotonde and had some oysters instead. And imagined how Picasso and Modigliani hung out there 100 years ago.
