Travelling to see your college MT perform

As folks with rising HS seniors are being hit by lots of application fees, we’re missing ever more college performances due to travel costs. Would I be a bad person if I secretly started hoping they don’t land those huge can’t-miss roles very often?

I do think it’s important for our kids to realize their adoring parents won’t always be in the audience as they pursue their career, but I still wish that money tree I planted a couple years ago would start producing!

One thing you can do as a high school senior parent just embarking on the 4 years of travel is pick one airline and one hotel chain and always use them so at least you rack up points to eventually get free travel!!

Not seeing the shows has been the worst. While she was home I never missed a performance so I knew it would be an adjustment this year and I started prepping for it So far I have seen both of her performances. She was cast in a mainstage show so I made plans to go and see that. I was fortunate enough to sit in on a dress rehearsal for a one act she was in as well. When she was home for fall break we talked about the how often I could come out and we are both aware it won’t be that often. I won’t be able to go to the cabarets, or other shows that she is in. Since winter travel is the hardest I will probably try to make the fall and spring ones if she is cast. She was a little sad but understood and I told her if it happened to be a part that she really wanted me to see her in I would try my hardest to make it but to use the “you have to come see this one” very sparingly.

@broadway95 - I’d wanted to thank you for mentioning sitting in on rehearsals, as for some reason it hadn’t occurred to me until you did. We asked during our visit for Family Weekend and were allowed to sit in on the first run through of D’s show that we would otherwise have had to miss. The combination of that with the final production photographs were ALMOST as good as being there. Thanks for the idea!

I also wanted to add that with two in college now we have been able to miss twice as many performances. :)
