I have heard of this happening before. I won’t name the college. You have to be careful and look out for yourself. You should have applied regular decision at other places.
Any updates OP?
Would love an update, OP? Have a sophomore son, would like to know how things shook out!
Hey guys. Yep, I managed to get regular decision applications done to a number of schools. I am still waiting for decisions, which should come out in the next few weeks. I will be sure to let you know how they go and update this thread accordingly
I did not end up following through with any emails or complaints to my original school. I decided against it and am hoping the best for the regular decision round.
Hey everyone!
Thanks for the support over the past few stressful months. Just here to post an update about how everything went for me. I ended up getting rejected in the RD round for the original school, which is quite unfortunate. However, I was lucky enough to receive admission at a few other top schools. I was admitted RD to Harvard, Wharton (Joseph Wharton Scholar), and I got the CV scholarship at Vandy, among some other offers. I am very grateful for these offers and I have learnt a lot from this process and would love to share some key takeaways for prospective student-athletes.
- Don't feel pressured to ED to any good school/offer you get, especially if you need financial aid. I think I was scared I wouldn't get any good offers and that made me feel pressured to ED to this school, but I was better off waiting for the RD round.
- Playing sports at a high level is definitely a very good extracurricular even if you are not being recruited! I was worried my chances at D1 schools and Ivies would be slim to none, as I was not being recruited. But sports was definitely my main extracurricular and I think it showed the best parts of my character. So if you're unsure whether to keep pursuing your sport at a high level, I recommend to do it! As long as your academics and other EC's are not hindered.
- The college process is random! The funny thing is, I was accepted to these top schools without being recruited at any of them, but I was also rejected at a lot of D3 schools, arguably less competitive (WashU, Amherst, JHU), that I was being recruited at! Just goes to show how random the college process is, so cast a wide net.
If you have any questions feel free to comment/Pm me. Thanks guys!!
Hey guys, just here with an update. I ended up getting rejected from my original school in the regular decision round. Fortunately, I received a number of other very good offers. I was accepted into Harvard, Wharton (Joseph Wharton Scholar), received the CV Scholarship (full-tuition) at Vandy, and the Woodruff (full-ride) at Emory. Right now, I am choosing between Emory and Harvard, but leaning towards the latter. I was not recruited at Harvard, Wharton or Vandy, and was recruited at Emory. I will be most likely joining club tennis at Harvard.
I would love to share some tips with prospective student-athletes. I thought I did the whole recruitment process ok but learnt a lot of valuable lessons.
- Don't feel pressured to commit to any school ED, especially if you are dependent on financial aid and/or you have very good academic stats and other EC's.
- If you receive any athletic offer that is not in writing/too good to be true, it probably is. Unless you have an acceptance letter, still be cautious and prepare as if you had not received that offer in the first place.
- Elite sport is a good EC, even if you are not recruited. If you are thinking about whether to continue a sport at a high level, but know you won't be recruited at Ivies/top d1 schools, keep playing! Athletics was by far my biggest EC, and I think it was pushed me over the edge for admission to Harvard, Wharton and Vandy, even though I wasn't recruited.
- College admissions are random, so cast a wide net! I was rejected to a number of arguably less competitive schools, where I was being recruited as a student-athlete (Amherst, John Hopkins, WashU).
Thanks for bearing with me through this process guys. Feel free to ask any questions or message me.
What a happy ending @tennis 98! I completely understand your decision not to complain about the ED school, but just consider that there the coach can be a repeat offender for future students without constraints since nobody knows about it. Nonetheless, big congrats on your outstanding outcomes. Please post after during your first year on campus to let us know how you like your new school, okay? Your lessons will definitely help future scholar-athletes.
Your story was brutal, and sorry to hear that you got twisted around like that. And I guess Harvard makes for an ok consolation prize
Thanks so much for the support Will definitely keep you guys updated with how everything goes.
