Tripadvisor pizza hall of shame--no New Haven, NY 4th

I once saw a show on the food channel about New York pizza vs. Chicago pizza and which was the best. It was entertaining, but I don’t even remember who won. Neither one looked to my taste. Chicago pizza “pie” would have me on sauce overload. I like the sauce to be light. And wayyyyy too much bread. New York crust looked thinner, but it looked limp. I like my crust to be thin and crispy, with light sauce, light meat, and heavy veggies. I don’t know who makes pizza like that. I just seem to come upon it like that by chance.

Oh, come on.

I suppose McDonald’s makes the best darn burgers, too, huh?

The best pizza is that leftover piece toasted in the toaster oven, for breakfast. It doesn’t matter much where it came from.

I also think New Haven pizza is the best, but I agree that good pizza places are popping up elsewhere. We have some really good pizza in DC, including in the suburbs.

Oldfort, ha ha, that made me laugh. It does sound like something she would say! Not to mention she’d be against ranking pizzas in the first place!! :D

But now, Pizzagirl has weighed in. She doesn’t even like pizza that much! Who would have thunk it? And not even Chicago pizza. So, there you have it.

In my neck of the woods, flatbread pizza is more the rage.

PS, about pizza from New Haven…Back when my daughter was on the ski team at her college, another girl on the team was from New Haven and her parents owned one of the well known pizza places there. Every weekend, when we would attend the college ski races in NH, and many parents came from all over to attend and we’d all bring stuff for a big pot luck lunch for the team, her parents brought up many boxes of cold pizza from New Haven!

Isn’t “flatbread pizza” just pizza that costs about 8 bucks more?

Consolation – I think we went to the same place in Naples. It spoils you for anything else.

Flatbread pizza is disgusting. The best pizza I’ve had was on Long Island - a restaurant that I worked on the renovations for. They also had a salad with gorganzola that was delicious, and I hate gorganzola!

Maybe the citizens of New Haven are trying to cut down on the lines by not voting. Maybe they are on this thread trashing New Haven pizza. ;)

Has anybody been to Old Forge, Pennsylvania? It is apparently another pizza mecca, with something like 20 pizza joints in a town of less than 10,000 (near Scranton).

My local joint is loaded with cheese, crisp routine crust- not too thin, not too thick. Hot out of the oven, steaming, that’s what’s good. (I think the guys are Armenian.) I discovered my affection for NYC pizza after a weekend looking for the supposedly great bagels. I know this is debatable, but I even had a good, tasty slice in Port Authority. And, no great bagels.

The list is nonsense but …

For example, Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix is well known but the city as a whole? No.

And Boston, where I live, is not a pizza mecca by any means. No one here thinks so.

“Maybe the citizens of New Haven are trying to cut down on the lines by not voting. Maybe they are on this thread trashing New Haven pizza.”

I am one of the fortunate whose family doesn’t have to stand in line. We even get the same table when we go. When I was little Sally use to let me go in back where the ovens are and get out sodas. I have never been to Pepe’s - it would be sacriledge!

oh yes - I’ve heard the rumors of the fortunate ones who actually do get to make reservations and perhaps have a regular table on a regular night…

Please don’t brag, it’s unseemly ;)

Bronx Pizza in San Diego (Hillcrest) is run by New Yorkers and has excellent pizza! There is always a line out the door when you drive by. And you may be right that the pizza just tasted so good because whoever wrote the review loved their trip to San Diego.

A New Yorker for most of my life, I never knew that New Haven pizza was a thing though now that I read it here I vaguely recall a movie from the 80’s about Portuguese pizza waitresses and preppy guys or something…Julia Roberts may have been involved.

Is New Haven pizza supposed to be Portuguese?

The only pizza here in Ohio that I like is from a hole in the wall near OSU in Columbus by a Greek family from Queens :D

“Is New Haven pizza supposed to be Portuguese?”

No, that is New London pizza.

“Please don’t brag, it’s unseemly”

But there is so little else in my life I get to brag about. :(

I remember seeing a “NY style” pizza place in LA that advertised making their dough with NYC tap water which they brought to LA for the purpose.

Ah thanks Emily.

I looked up the movie - Mystic Pizza.

We can always address the ever-popular topic of which Ray’s Original is actually the original. :)

Originally from NY and live in CT and Florida. The New Haven pizza is very good, some of the small, local NYC pizza shops are fabulous. We were lucky to find a good local pizza place in St. Pete Beach.
