Trojans Defeat Gamecocks

As the parent of both a UNC alum and a current senior at South Carolina it’s been interesting to hear the banter when visiting the respective schools. The argument is that UNC is the “real” Carolina and USC is the “other” Carolina or “little” Carolina to Tar Heel fans and the the other way around (though often less nicely stated) among Gamecock fans.

D is currently doing an internship with Gamecock Marketing Services and was aware of the ongoing lawsuit as it was a topic of conversation in several of the Sports law classes she was taking.

As other have said, for as long as I can remember the west coast USC has been called either SC or Southern Cal by any and all sports announcers, in their own commercials during games etc. Even their old sweatshirts, team warmups and caps simply said “SC” so I do find it odd that they are taking issue with the one school whose official state abbreviation is in fact SC and the school is the “University of…SC.”

I did think that Southern Cal’s lawyer showed little class when he took a shot at the South Carolina mascot…

…especially in this day of so much TV advertising when the name Trojans tends to call to mind something very different than their man on a horse… :)

On second thought, given the mess that currently surrounds their athletic department with more than one NCAA investigation underway and the recent hiring of Lane Kiffin as head football coach, maybe I’m not as surprised by the lack of class shown by their attorney as I initially was…

Seems like class isn’t a prerequisite for those doing the hiring at Southern Cal these days.

We’ve got a South Carolina alum in the family, and she and everyone I’ve met in those parts refers to the Columbia school as ‘Carolina.’ I never asked her about that that little college in Chapel Hill. LOL.
