Most of the time it is due to leaving small valuables unattended in public places, or leaving the dorm room door or ground floor window unlocked. Lots of college students come from low crime areas, so they may have had little need to take even what most consider basic normal (as opposed to paranoid) security precautions.
I’d be careful about having your parents cosign loans on top of the $27k student loans. What are you planning to study and what are your career goals?
@austinmshauri — Studying Neuroscience for Pre-Med, then Medical School. Financial situation will improve by Med School time, though, so not really too bad.
Let me just tell you…medical school will largely be funded with loans, loans and more loans. There isn’t much financial aid for medical school students. You want to keep your undergrad loans as close to $0 as possible.
And most medical schools require parent information on the financial aid forms…varies as to how long depending on the school.
When you say your finances will improve by the time you go to Med school…if you actually do…what does this mean? Does it mean your parents will be able to fund $50,000 a year or more for you to attend? Oh…and $50,000 would be low including tuition and living expenses…and medical school students really can’t work.
@thumper — I mean that both my parents and I will be in a better financial situation. This will hopefully allow us to take out the loans you mentioned.
My current goal is to get through my post-secondary education with as little debt as possible, this while still attaining a great education. This may mean taking gap years, taking out loans, working through college, etc. If I am lucky enough to get into a killer school, I would find it terribly difficult to willfully reject that opportunity in favor of something of a poor academic quality and reputation; however, I will certainly evaluate all my options as they present themselves, weighing cost with all other relevant factors.
Medical school is expensive, as you mention, and I have admittedly not planned every little detail as to how I am to pay for it. This is because I obviously do not know any figures or realities pertinent to this future pursuit. I will just try to do my best in college to assure a financially- and intellectually-prosperous future.
