Truth about extracurriculars?

Yes, @intparent , how do you know all that? I remember there was a news story a while back that she was looking at Brown, Tufts, and Barnard, among others. Wonder where she applied?

@intparent That’s certainly very impressive. I do think these accomplishments, like any student’s, need to be viewed “in context” (the idea behind holistic review).

No matter who your father is, if you’re a bad singer/volleyball player/basketball player, you won’t succeed. More power to her. These are the accomplishments I respect most, because there’s the least potential for her family name to matter.

I don’t know what role (if any) her family name played in getting her the TV and fashion gigs, so I’m not going to speculate idly. Here, that potential does exist.

Being the president’s daughter probably does make it easier to raise $250,000 - you have access to parts of the same donor network that raised $700 million for her dad. Again, no idea if she used that access, though it’s a distinct possibility.

I’m a big fan of the Obama family, each for different reasons, but we can’t really know how Malia would’ve fared if her father was still teaching constitutional law at the University of Chicago. Still very well, most likely. Let’s just remember to maintain some perspective.

A fairly good comparison IMO is Chelsea Clinton. Is she a smart young woman? The folks at Stanford, Oxford, and Columbia certainly seemed to think so. Has she done interesting work at McKinsey, NBC, and the Clinton Foundation? I think she has. Would she earn $65,000 speaking fees if her parents were Paul and Niki Tsongas? Maybe.

Google & Wikipedia are your friend. No idea where she will end up. There was another thread devoted to speculation a few months ago. I know she has visited Brown, NYU, Barnard, and Columbia. Probably lots more, too, though. If we want to discuss more, we should probably bump that thread.
