@bjkmom, 1.2 is not slow. The expected loss on WW is 1/2 to 2 pounds a week, and you’re right in that range. Many (though not all) members lose more the first week than usual.
I joined Dec 19 and have lost about 10 lbs. I’m primarily vegetarian but do enjoy fish on occasion, mostly when eating out, so adapting to the plan has been relatively easy for me. I’m eating healthier, measuring my snacks and rarely feel hungry. When I do the plan conditions you to reach for a handful of carrots or an apple rather than snacking on chips, etc. I like, with weekly points, you can splurge on a night out or have an extra drink with friends without feeling like you’ve totally blown it. I’d like to lose another 30 lbs and realize this is probably a life time commitment for me.
It sounds like WW and having a new and different way to think about food has helped many folks.
This thread has inspired me to make my support group meetings in the next few days about removing barriers to being more active, which I think is part and parcel with living a healthier lifestyle.
I downloaded and printed www.cdc.gov/physical activity/basics/adding-pa/barriers.html
Yay you!
Last night I figured I’m overdue to start some exercise. I’m not a huge exercise fan… I’m on my feet all day long, and have no real problems with 11 or 12 miles a day when we hit Disney World every few years. But I don’t do gyms, and I pretty much never exercise for the sake of exercise.
We inherited a treadmill over the summer from some neighbors. I’m pretty sure it’s haunted. I got on it last night. After a 1 minute warmup, the pace goes into an Olympic sprint. Thank goodness for the sideboards; you can get onto them while slowing down the pace to “59 year old woman.”
But I did 10 minutes. (Closer to 13; I stopped and started a few minutes trying to survive the pace before I hit the 10 consecutive minute pace.) Wimpy, I know. I figure 10 minutes a few times a week can certainly increase to 15, then 20 and so on. And I’ll have to choose my time better; I want to be able to blast the music, and both my husband and daughter needed the computers in the same room while I was on the treadmill.
But it’s 10 minutes I wasn’t sitting in front of the TV.
Good for you @BJKmom! I started WW this week with your nudge and am going to start with some exercise on Wednesday (for Lent!)
Today I officially restarted WW. I dropped last time because too complicated with Gluten free foods that were high in points and never in database, but this thread and new GF WW facebook group have inspired me. Plus dear friend is in town and told me she had just started and lost 7 pounds - I decided the universe was in agreement on this one.
Glad to hear your progress @bjkmom. I joined WW in mid-December but this thread has motivated me to be much more diligent in tracking my food. Haven’t gone to a meeting yet but may try that too. I think this is going to be a very slow process and I need all the support I can get.
I’m also trying to remember to wear my fitbit everyday. I’m absolutely amazed by how many steps I take just doing simple housework.
Our kids helped us get a water rower for Christmas. We have had it since early Hanuary and use it 2x/day. I’m up to 8 minutes 2x/day. I also try to log 5000+ steps on my iPhone app that tracks steps. So far I’ve been pretty good.
I did try doing more rowing but pulled something and had to dial things down and go slower and only 5 minutes while building up a minute every week or so. I like that there are no excuses as the rower is in our living room and both H and I do it, one after the other. When we are done, you can turn it upright and it takes no more space than a talk grandfather clock.
Rowing is kind to joints and quiet, contemplative while if you push yourself you can get the heart rate up quickly.
Yesterday and today, my exercise is shoveling snow. Both days, 5,000 steps shoveling the driveway before noon.
So if you need to be careful with the zero point foods on WW, are there free foods where you can eat unlimited amounts? I’m still considering if I’m mentally ready to join WW.
I’d say you could safely eat many veggies (some exceptions) as much as you want.
When I look up a food on the WW database, is there any way to tell if the points reflect the new Freestyle program? II just had a chicken, kale and mozzarella burger for lunch. It is showing up as 4 points, but every ingredient is now zero except the mozzarella. An ounce of shredded mozzarella is 2 points and it doesn’t seem like there could be 2 oz in one burger.
The website contains the newly scaled Freestyle points. If you have an old cookbook withpoints in it, there’s a conversion scale someplace online.
Did you factor in the bun?
Didn’t have a bun - just the burger with a little guacamole on top. Man, I can’t remember the last time we even had a piece of bread in the house.
Is the whole database verified by WW? I had the impression that many of the packaged items were submitted by users so could be working off a different system. I’ve been assuming that if there is a photo of the food WW provided the info and if there is the generic logo of a grocery bag a user submitted it. Am I wrong?
I’m working off the WW app, only accessible to WW members.
It’s accurate.
Down another 2 pounds, for a total of 6.8 over 3 weeks Doing the happy dance!
Congratulations!
I feel like I’m getting the hang of the program and went to my first meeting this week. Can’t say I enjoyed it but I’m going to try to go for a little bit. I would love to have your same success.
Wow!! The happy dance sounds like activity, which can give you bonus points, especially an energetic happy dance! Congrats!
I’ve been in WW twice. The first time, I thought the meetings were merely OK, not hugely worthwhile. The second time, I’ve had a much better experience. The difference was in the leaders and the groups of people who attended the two meetings. My current leader is much better at eliciting good stories and insights from the group members, and the group itself is much more engaged.
So if you find that after a few weeks, you’re still not enthused about your meeting, it might be worthwhile to see if there’s another meeting that fits your schedule. You might have a very different experience at a different meeting.
Is this for WW reasons? I ask because I want the new people here to realize that it isn’t necessary to eliminate grains from your diet on WW (although you will find it necessary to keep track of the points in grain products carefully). In fact, including some whole grains can be a good idea because it can help you avoid constipation, which is a problem for quite a few WW members.
