trying to get mail service

How long before the toilets were installed?

Did the landlord even have a certificate of occupancy with all these shortcomings?

ETA what kind of heat is there? Gas?

Your daughter should contact the health department about this…if there isn’t heat come winter, that could be a huge problem.

Gas lines are supposed to be inspected prior to occupancy.

@CTTC, the toilets were reinstalled the same day.

Thanks, all, for the suggestions about mail (don’t fuss) and gas (do fuss). I love this forum!

So, another question. In my digging through the New York City buildings’ division records, I discovered a page called “Boiler Details,” which indicates that the “temp” (temporary?) commercial low pressure boiler at the property was inspected this past Wednesday and the results were “failed F/T.” Any suggestions for how to proceed with this information?

Do they have hot water? You can file a complaint on NYC.gov and 311.

They must have hot water. I would think its a health department violation to rent a place without it.

But then…if “offending” the landlord is a worry, filing a health department complaint would surely do this.

I’m guessing the landlord did not have a certificate of occupancy for this apartment, and really no one should be living in it. It was not ready to rent when the tenants moved in.

I would be worried that the work isn’t going to get done, and they will need to find outer housing. To be honest…if this were my kid, I’d be encouraging them to find another place to rent.

There is a huge back-up in NYC getting gas lines hooked up primarily because of the building explosion in the spring but also because that is NYC and so many building conversions. Friends of younger d were in this situation in Washington Heights and got their landlord to give them some kind of food allowance $ because they couldn’t cook in their apartment. Friend’s daughter and her husband and baby could not gas line installed in their house that they bought and renovated in the South Slope. Took a visit to her city councilman’s office to do the trick… she grew up in Park Slope, the daughter of well-known community activists.

@bookmama22, what’s your take on this? Do you think the backlog of gas line hookups will be resolved by cold weather time?

Well for their sake I would hope so but they need to be contacting the landlord on a regular basis. They can also report the lack of gas line to 311. If not ready by cold weather, they can insist that their landlord provide space heaters but you have to very careful with space heaters so not a great solution. Also if a requirement that someone be in the apartment when the gas line is hooked up, make certain someone is there. Work was done in my colleague’s building that required a new heating system be installed and she and her late husband sort of functioned as building manager and she had to be available several times for inspectors, contractors, etc.
