Apparently you can call and get a free upgrade if you threaten to jump the TT ship.

I’ve used TaxAct for over ten years very happily, never used anything else so I don’t know what the others do. But I find this quote from that article to be incorrect:

I would certainly consider what TaxAct does an interview approach and quite simple. I don’t have to “face down” any forms with TaxAct IMO but then I wouldn’t use any tax software if I didn’t have a good understanding of taxes and wasn’t able to look at the forms to see what the program put where as a double check on the program.
Interesting Forbes article on the issue.
That’s simply a lie. I complained and got the free upgrade LAST year.
Thanks again patsmom. It worked this time and it was still free. Although I’m now having trouble downloading but at least I have a confirmation of purchasing it.
Seems like they’ve gotten quite a backlash about this. The rating on Amazon is 1.5 out of 5. I don’t think I’ve seen that bad a rating for anything. I’ll use it this year because it’s late enough that I want to get started and it’s free, but I will not pay for a product from a company that uses this method.

Here’s a link that’s good for the next few days – all versions of Turbo Tax are 50% off through January 26.
I used TaxAct already, very simple. I like that it has forms and “interview” visible at once, showing me where my entries are going as I answer questions. I think TT’s lost me.
patsmom, Thank you for the link. They applied the discount retroactively, and I got the half price.
Does TaxAct have states too?
Thanks also Patsmom,
Yes TaxAct has states. My federal was free (Schedule C and all), state was offered for around $13 I think.
Any feedback from TurbTax users that jumped ship this year? Is import with others (TaxCut, HR Block etc) working well?
TacAct imported my return from last year’s PDF. Everything was accurate.
Just received an e-mail from Turbotax, with title “Our apologies. Want to make it up to you”, a fairly long letter, apparently after filing our return this year, we can request a $25 refund from Turbotax if we have to upgrade to Premier or Home and Business for 2014.
I am no where near ready to file, usually do it in April.
Looks legit, anyone else getting same email?
Here is an article from Forbes I came across:
If you take advantage of the 50% sale promotion, the rebate will be smaller.
Just a heads up for anyone who is self-employed and bought exchange-based heath insurance last year – and whose income may qualify for a premium tax credit: Neither TurboTax nor H&R Block software are currently able to correctly handle the reconciliation between tax credit and self-employed health insurance deduction. TaxAct reportedly has addressed problems with their software that existed in their first release with an upgrade (but this is based on an anecdotal report from one taxpayer, so it remains to be seen whether the software has problems with more complex situations).
In case anyone knows, I started a 529 this year and Turbo Tax asks if you did but not how much. Is that bc it is state only credit or what?
Rats, I meant to buy the discounted TT by 1/26 and I forgot! S has about $300 of income that needs to go on Sched C. I’m ready to do his filings all by hand (I’m an accountant)…he’s got a resident CT and a non-resident MA to file also…
@justamom5465 My Sched C was easy and free with TaxAct.
JustaMom, I did the same thing. Actually had it open on my computer screen on the evening of the 26th… got sidetracked and forgot. Tried hit the “purchase” button the next morning but it was too late!
Did anyone see the “apology” from the CEO? “We should have told you ahead of time we were going to fleece you,”
