I’m confused. You’re getting 24K per year. leaving a balance of at least 30K a year. That makes it at least $120K over 4 years. If Duke was 60K by senior year. it would be less expensive for your family.
Houston is hot in summer. Luckily, you won’t be there for most of the summer. I would say the summer is on par with Durham. You don’t think “socially adept” people thrive at Rice? I’m not even going to respond to that one. All I can say to you is, you are very lucky Rice accepted you.
Dorms at Rice have A/C where dorms at Duke don’t.
We loved Rice as well and I think/hope you will too. The residential college system seems to promote a great sense of community and belonging and it is ranked one of the happiest campuses, top 3. My son ended up choosing Columbia but Rice was very close. We had no financial aid at either school.
@bordertexan - The OP said his parents could afford Rice. Using your figures, that means they can afford $120k. At Duke, they’d presumably be able to afford the same amount, but would additionally have to borrow $60k. That makes Duke more expensive.
@dodgersmom OP didn’t get too specific with actual numbers. I thought he was saying it would cost parents a total of 60K through senior year vs. 120K at Rice. I have more of a problem with the insinuation that someone as socially adept as him might have a problem at Rice. IMO, the location of Rice is miles above Durham.
Yeah! So you guys let me make this clear. I have an older sister who is an upcoming junior at a state school. The FA package Duke gave us ($27,000) ONLY happened because of the “Sibiling in Undergrad” factor. (They significantly reduce your cost if you have another sibling in college) however, when I spoke with My financial aid counselor at Duke, she warned us to be prepared for when my older sister graduates (in 2 years) because then my cost of attendance will shoot up back to $60-$67k (because they don’t consider graduated students in the FA package) therefore, my parents, being mindful of the future knew that once I become a junior we would have to take out about $30k loans a year for 2 years (Hence the $60k debt I was talking about)
@bordertexan Duke’s class of 2019 will be the first class to have AC in all their rooms so that’s not a factor anymore.
My daughter’s last two schools she was deciding between were Rice and Duke. Money was the same in our case for both schools with aid and scholarships. She chose Rice after visiting both in April. I know either one would have been a great school for her. She felt quite comfortable at Rice and we are happy she will be happy!
