Twins offered 1.6 million in scholarships after getting accepted to 56 colleges

What does his dress style and his Facebook profile have to do with any of this, @SeniorStruggling? (besides being too stupid to lock down his Facebook profile but that seems to be a common mistake made by young and old)

@doschicos He is trying to be a motivator for underprivelaged black Chicago students when he has more than most kids in white suburbs.

this is a direct quote from the article…“A lot of people say you can’t do it because of where you’re from,” Deprice said. “Don’t listen to them.”…

He comes from a seemingly well off family that has been going to college back about 100 years.

I take back what I said about not being underprivileged since it seems they get the max pell grant.

I also know that he is going to take out 40k worth of loans to go to his dream school. Maybe we should shift focus on the subject.

So here we have a family with a ton of expensive luxuries, that qualifies for the pell grant, and is going to allow a student to take about 160k in loans.

EDIT: I think they count loans as scholarship…

He stated that they publicized this to show other comparatively ordinary Chicago kids that college could be a reality. Although I am generally opposed to publicizing this kind of thing, at least that is a worthy goal.

As is making it clear that not burdening one’s single parent with college costs is crucial.

As always, when this kind of story goes to TV , social media, and incompetent click bait Internet sources, the details are messed up and people who know better are annoyed.

I have more sympathy for them than for Costco essay girl. That was pure self promotion.

I look at the list of colleges. None of them appear to be 100% meet need schools. Most are FAFSA schools. Which means they would only qualify for pell. So for them to get a full ride or close to it they would have to have merit and lots of it. Maybe the reason they didn’t apply to higher tier schools is because the chance of getting merit at a college below their stats are higher. The boy plans to attend Morehouse which doesn’t offer much in the aid. To get a full ride there he must have a large amount of merit.

@sensation723 Morehouse gapped him 38k in added parent plus loans. look at the link i provided above with face book spaced out

what i got out of this is the girl got two full-rides and the boy got two “full scholarship offers” – whatever that is.

good for them.

now i want the follow-up story to be “Chicago twins ACCEPT full-ride college scholarships.”

your link doesn’t work.

Well good for them; they at least have lots of choices.

Costco essay girl?

He should lock his Facebook profile. All the pictures of him and his middle finger are really classy, as are all the posts where he feels the need to use street language and the “n” word.

He has worked hard and accomplished an incredible thing. I wish he knew how potentially powerful his example could be. But I was a kid once too, so I should shut my mouth. Buy good for him for going through all that work.

I don’t see where they talk about the actual aid/scholarship offers to any individual school.

I sent you a pm with the facebook post @sensation723

good grief. i take it back.

now the story becomes “Twins Earn $1.6 Million in Scholarships, But One Opts For $160K in Loans”

if he goes to Morehouse and becomes a Morehouse Man, he’ll clean up his act a bit.

It sounds like this young man has some outside scholarships but still going into significant debt to attend Morehouse. That and some of his FB posts show poor judgment.

Wow–sounds like a train wreck to me!

I read that 90% of the offers were to the girl and only 10% to the boy. Why “combine” at all?

Hopefully they’ve read the fine print and know what they need to do do keep these scholarships. This article reminds me of one in the NYT recently where a girl accepted a full scholarship to North Carolina Central U only to discover that she had to maintain a 3.8gpa which she was unable to do and eventually had to drop out.

Are you familiar at all wth the neighborhoods of Uptown in Chicago, senior struggling?

Do you REALLY think he is wearing a Burberry shirt, or a knockoff?

Let’s practice what we say when we hear of other people’s good fortune. “Congratulations; how nice for you.”
