Not for this situation, however, I have in-laws who head south for winter … and I have begun accompanying them on their trips due to MIL’s slow recovery from a broken hip… I needed to change their tickets last spring because their original flight had been cancelled and found that the rebooking charge and credit provided was really bogus … and so, what I learned was that they are better off booking one way tickets vs round trip. Not sure if this excessive penalty for changing was just due to the long window of time between their original departure and their ultimate return. But, I have definitely seen since then that one way was much more cost effective and almost pays for itself if you have to make a change.

Ironic, I messed up on my original flight. Instead of my return date being 2 days after my arrival, it was for the following Friday. Luckily, the cancellation fee was only 50 dollars, and I actually benefited from doing that by about $50 by buying 2 one ways for a total of 410 dollars, and the original round trip was 515!! I’m very lucky, AND the airlines have cheaper baggage rates.

Many airlines have a 24-hour “grace” period, where you can make changes without a penalty, but you can’t go one second beyond the 24-hours. Yea, I’m getting tired of paying change fees. I’ve paid them a few times and that was a few times too many. :(

Well, it was before the 24 hours, but they said they don’t change flights. You have to cancel and rebook.

Sometimes, I’ve spoken to “technical support,” who have been amazingly helpful, even more so than the “reservations agents” who are located, who knows where. They were able to help me cancel a reservation at no charge when the person we had booked told us he wanted to make his own arrangements. <grrrr></grrrr>

Yes, each airlines seems to make its own policies.
