Two suspects shot dead by police after attack on peaceful hate group event in Garland, TX

Oh no, I think blush wine is even worse. How about if we take alternating sips of white and red (red to wash the taste of the white stuff down), and snack on blueberries while we do it? Or blueberry flavored chocolate? That way we can hit all the patriotic angles, red, white and blue. I’ll make sure and do that on my long flight home tonight, just to help keep the peace around here. Everyone needs to do their part to keep this country safe!

That’s ok with me as long as you are not sitting in front for your long flight home.

I hope I’m sitting near the front, that way I can get my wine for free. But not in the front two seats, don’t worry. Or is this the time to make a poor taste joke about flying better when I’m drunk? Just kidding! Bizarrely though, I heard that Air France pilots actually get wine brought to them in the cockpit. That seems kind of dicey.

When you come over to dig up the bearded iris that I am so tired of, feel free to grab some wine.
I made a nice little collection, but I just don’t like it any more & it seems to make my fibro worse.
I mostly have red, but some white in there too.

What is the goal of drawing cartoons?

What is the goal of killing any Christians that you get your hands on?

I don’t think this lady deserves any praise… in fact, she is probably really obnoxious and I would want nothing to do with her. But she is 100% entitled to free speech, which makes our country great. And her actions are NOT IN ANY WAY comparable to systematic murder of people practicing a certain religion.

Just because the actions are very different does not mean that the goals are different.

“Just because the actions are very different does not mean that the goals are different.”

Do you actually think the goals of the cartoon drawers are the same as the killers? You think the cartoon drawers want to execute all the infidels? All the millions of us on this planet?

I might come over and grab your wine, but those bearded iris’s sound downright scary!

The groups’ common goals are listed in reply #202. To reiterate:

From the standpoint of goals and effects, they are basically the same between Daesh/IS/ISIL/ISIS and Geller/AFDI/SIOA/etc.:

A. To cause Americans to fear and loath Muslims (in general, as opposed to Daesh/IS/ISIL/ISIS or jihadis and their ilk in particular) and support groups like AFDI/SIOA/etc. and/or practice discrimination against Muslims.
B. To incite disaffected Muslims to support Daesh/IS/ISIL/ISIS and/or attack Americans.

Or, to put it in simpler terms, they want people to believe in a “the US versus all Muslims” war, rather than a “Daesh/IS/ISIL/ISIS [or jihadi] versus everyone else” war.

Now, Daesh/IS/ISIL/ISIS may have other (even nastier) goals as well, but those which apply to the US are those listed above.

SNL’s take

“Their goals and intended effects of their actions are the same, even though their actions are drastically different. Yes, some actions (attempted murder) are much more noxious than others, but do you really suggest that non-violent actions in pursuit of noxious goals are praiseworthy?”

Lol! “Some actions are more noxious than others.” Understatement of the year. Let’s see, someone cuts me off in traffic. I can give them the finger, or pull out a gun and shoot them.

People can have all the noxious goals they like. What matters are the ACTIONS, ucb.

I could (theoretically) sit in my home and write in my diary about how I hate all Muslims, or I could go plant bombs at mosques. Gee, which is worse? Scratching my head here.

I must be really evil. I have some of the same goals as vicious murderers. Each day I hope to wake up to live another day. I share goals with some terrible people, so we’re all the same, I guess?

For me, what ucalumnus is saying is that its not about just any event showing draw-Mohammed sketches…it’s who the sponsor and catalyst is and what her goals are. A no-shades-of-gray West versus Islam war of words and pictures is in aid of what …well, imo, it’s to get more Americans behind a full-scale war against “Islamists” of all kinds.

Why try to create a Charlie Hedbo incident here? Why the polarizing ads on buses and subway trains? Why solicit funding and support for a film insulting Mohammed?

Once tensions and emotions on both sides are elevated to blind hate, and all Muslims become the enemy, it is that much easier to talk of bombs and battles that will target large populations of what we might have before considered innocent people instead of just the evil jihadists.

The “nuke Iran” type talk is only on the fringe now. Geller, I believe, wants it to be much more accepted as an option.

I cannot think of a more appropriate reason to hate someone than because they want to kill you. Geller’s hate for extremists doesn’t offend me at all. I recall seeing a quote by her that she is specifically not talking about all Muslims.

If the two would-be assassins had just done what most of us do to people spouting rhetoric we find tasteless (stay home, ignore them, and go about the business of living their happy lives), no one would ever have known about this obscure little event and no one would care about Pam Geller and her message.

This event was not obscure, it was widely reported and advertised on the Internet…how else did the two guys in Arizona hear about it?

These weren’t local jihadis reading the local paper. I’ll bet the event, pre-attack, rattled cages as far away as Syria.

it turned into a national event.

it would not have been a national event if some people drew some cartoons and that was the end of it.

The rare thing is the casual assumption that the attack was likely enough to have led a reasonable person - Geller not being one, blinded by hate that she is - to have avoided all this unpleasantness by… doing something else with her free time.

On a different note, hi cat! How are you doing?
