Virginia Tech has over 30,000 students. That’s a small city’s worth of people.
And what do you think they missed? Do you have evidence that either of these suspects told anyone in authority at Virginia Tech that they were plotting to murder a 13 year old girl?
This crime would be shocking and unusual in any small city – or big city – in America. Not sure what the size of VT has to do with anything.
And more than fair share of crazies. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/va-tech-student-sentenced-killing-friend-date-article-1.2243489
I should hope if they were that clearly disturbed a pro looking for it would find some hints. It should not take–“I’m really thinking of killing somebody” to raise a red flag.
“it should not take” You’d be surprised. Many patients can conceal some pretty disturbing thoughts and behaviors.
Somebody already beat you to the punch (way back on page 4) about that case you just linked to.
Then “counseling” is pretty near useless when it comes to serious issues. .
Counselors and psychiatrists are not mind readers. Just like if you go to a doctor and don’t tell him/her that you are in serious pain in some particular part of your body, they will have no reason to run certain tests. As a society, we have evolved to this weird point where we think that we can somehow eliminate risk from our lives . . . if we just ban all immigrants, if we screen all college students, etc. (except for guns for some reason which some people insist reduces their risk when it doesn’t). There just isn’t an easy fix that would prevent every bad act or actor. Shit happens. People snap. Some people are hidden psychopaths. Not that we should throw our hands up and not try, but you can’t hold a college responsible for something like this. The potentially more culpable party would be the high school administrator who reportedly was told by a friend of the victim that she was engaged in an inappropriate online relationship.
Well, I grew up in a city of about 20,000 people. Every couple of years some horrible, shocking crime happened there. Sometimes more often than that. But it didn’t become national news.
I’ve wondered about that. I read that the victim’s friend reported it to a school resource officer (part of police dept?). I’ve read the resource officer said no one ever told him anything. Someone’s lying…and I think I know which one.
We see the roommate horror stories here on CC. Can you imagine how Keepers’ roommate felt (not to mention the roommate’s family)? I think their dorm room is where the police found the victim’s Hello Kitty blanket (?).
I think we’ll have to wait and see whether the resource officer knew or not. He says he was not told, the police say they were never advised of anything either. The 13 year old friend says she did tell the resource officer. This girl’s 17 year old sister says this has shaken up her sister and her sister’s friends but doesn’t mention in an article I saw anything about knowing the sister had reported anything . Counselors and teachers who work with middle school kids have said it is not impossible that a 13 year old could lie to get attention or to be a “hero.” Hopefully, the truth will come out as this is further investigated. And if adults did know and did nothing, that is horrible.
Hopefully , either roommate of these two should be able to get a different room if they request it.
This case is truly horrible.
Just wanted to mention that tonight’s episode of “American Experience” on PBS is about Leopold and Loeb, as someone mentioned the similarities between this case and them earlier on.
Just saw this on the news today.
Warning for parents to delete the kik app from your childrens smartphones.

In terms of these apps-Nicole’s father will be on Dr. Phil on Wednesday. Preview says the father has said (I believe he was not living with his daughter) that it was clear before Christmas his daughter was chatting online with older men and that the profiles were fake. She was grounded from social media for awhile. The father, understandably, now regrets he did not do more.
Both VT students are facing charges. Hearing to take place this Friday.
