U Mich Ann Arbor Full ride

Sorry, I glossed over that: a) OP is awaiting a decision from GT and that b) GT is $15,000/year.

I’m not a big fan of Atlanta, but GT for sure, if you’re accepted. I love UMich and A2, but the delta of $200,000 makes the decision easy.

@Aspiring007 Your comment about GT versus the other schools is wrong. My DD graduated from GT last year and trust me, it is highly regarded. We are OOS and weighed UC’s against OOS publics. At the time my DD’s major was impacted while not at GT so she could graduate in 4 years. She received a small scholarships from local GT alumni which made GT cheaper than our UC’s. It was an incredible experience. My DD had a ton of faculty interaction, great research opportunities, support and every year she had at least 6 job offers for internships earning good money. At the same time she received the total college experience of big time sports, sorority, intramural champs, study abroad and a lot of friends. Her roommates and friends are now Fulbright Scholars, in highly-ranked med schools, or working at great companies all over the world. My DD has her dream job at a great salary in a wonderful city and is buying her own house this winter.

We were jealous all 4 years of her in-state GT friends who got that great scholarship provided by Georgia. If you have the opportunity and get accepted at GT, take it. You can go to graduate school at one of the other places you applied to. My DD’s friend turned down Princeton for GT because she couldn’t justify the cost to her family when she could basically attend GT for free. So what happened to her? She became a Fulbright Scholar and got into 14 medical schools!!

P.S. Oldest child attended Ohio State on a full-ride academic scholarship so I can’t ever say anything nice about “That School Up North.”

@jym626

Doesn’t UGA have some kind of transfer thing with GT?

@thumper1 - I haven’t read this thread yet, but I think you are asking me about this https://admission.gatech.edu/conditional-transfer-pathway When its offered, its for applicants who have had relatives attend GT. There are some other transfer pathway potions: https://admission.gatech.edu/transfer/transfer-pathway-programs

@Knowsstuff where are you getting this?

This is several years old, but take a look at the graph- the college reputation is a low variable to employers https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2014/08/the-thing-employers-look-for-when-hiring-recent-graduates/378693/

@Knowsstuff this student says they have no financial need. So why would financial aid at Michigan give him a need based grant?

And if he was going to get a merit award from Michigan, he would have gotten that. Merit aid is done by admissions.

@thumper1. I have seen students assuming they would not get financial aid then end up getting it. They might not understand their parents situation like owning their own business etc. Never said he would get money just by calling…

@Aspiring007 - when did you submit your GT application?

@Eeyore123. Read the threads and you will see the students who get OOS grant aid etc. We have 2 in college and Michigan gave us money also very unexpectedly. Purdue, Wisconsin, Illinois (where I live… Nada). Also know many kids from Chicago getting 1/2 to full rides. Some with outside scholarships.

Nov 2019

Just to add. It seems Michigan started giving OOS grants about 4 years ago on a more regular basis. Prior to that I think it was rare.

Here’s a link to the UMich OOS financial aid page:

https://finaid.umich.edu/new-undergraduates/non-resident-students-and-financial-aid/

^ Which shows need-based scholarship resources for OOS applicants.

Michigan has moved much in the direction of providing need based aid to more students. They meet full need for instate students. OOS student need is getting closer and closer to being met.

BUT this student clearly said…his family is not eligible for need based aid. I asked what his FAFSA EFC was and got no reply. While Michigan uses the Profile, the FAFSA EFC certainly would give some indication of minimally what Michigan would expect the family to pay. This family knew this when this student applied.

Michigan used to have many more merit awards. These are now much more competitive, and much less in total number for OOS students than in the past.

@Knowsstuff the need based grants you see for out of state students are for students with financial need…which this student says he doesn’t have.

It’s just that the family can’t pay the $60,000 plus cost of attendance…and he wondered what to do.

I still say…his instate options with the Zell Miller are fabulous. How fortunate to have these.

It’s too bad he didn’t apply EA to GT. First, the best bet for receiving merit aid is to EA students, and second…he would have his admissions decision by now.

@Knowsstuff

Does your kid receive need based aid? Or merit aid at Michigan?

Also, you had or have two in college. Right?

This OP doesn’t have siblings in college, has no financial need, and apparently didn’t qualify for merit aid at Michigan.

@Aspiring007

  1. Did you receive your financial aid package from Michigan?
  2. Did you receive merit aid from Michigan?
  3. Will you have a sibling in college when you start in the fall?
  4. What makes you think you don’t qualify for need based aid? Did you run the net price calculator on the Michigan site? If your parents are married, don’t own a business, aren’t self employed, don’t own real estate other than your primary residence, the Michigan NPC would be pretty accurate.
  5. Do your parents own a business or additional real estate?

@Knowsstuff
You are giving me some hope! We are from IL too. My son is in love with MI and was admitted but I have been preparing him that he probably can’t go if it’s 65K and UIUC is 35K. I had not heard of anyone OOS getting any real scholarships or aid money. EFC is pretty low but have substantial parental assets. So far only school that has given him financial aid numbers is WI, they only gave $2500 in a grant. How do you think you got money from MI?

OP- Which schools are you waiting to hear about the Stamps? Michigan? UGA? Why didn’t you apply to GT by Oct 15? You’d have heard by now and also been automatically considered for the Stamps.

GT releases their EA decisions on 1/18/20.
